INNOVATIONS & USING NEW TECHNOLOGY WORLD FIRST


Due to an increasing interest in high voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea transmission awnd distribution across the renewable market, Siemens Subsea has developed and qualified the world’s first wet-mate subsea electrical connector qualified to HVDC – the SpecTRON10 DC. As the Offshore Renewable energy industry moves forward with consented projects for arrays and farms already underway, the management of large scale subsea infrastructures and efficient energy transmission will be primary objectives. The use of wet-mate connectors qualified for direct current (DC) will have a key role to play in enabling this new market reality.


STRONG PEDIGREE


The fore-runner to SpecTRON10 DC, the Siemens SpecTRON10 subsea connector, has a strong pedigree and proven deployment track record which makes it a market leader in its voltage class for alternating current (AC) applications. The Siemens SpecTRON10 DC was deployed on a tidal energy demonstration array project which uses DC to export back to shore and it has played a critical role to enable the subsea AC/DC power conversion from ocean energy devices.


QUALIFICATION PROGRAMME


By researching across industry DC standards and gaining further understanding of DC electrical field distribution, coupled with Siemens extensive expertise and leadership in DC transmission, Siemens Subsea identified a rigorous specification from the renowned International Council on Large Electric Network (CIGRE).


Based on this specification and SpecTRON10’s proven AC track record, Siemens Subsea undertook a vigorous 12 month qualification programme, covering Long Load Cycle test on both negative and positive polarities, 120 day Zero Load test and a Polarity Reversal Cycle High Stress test.

product to better serve this emerging market. We developed our own test programme and invested substantially in a purpose built DC facility, to bolster our extensive AC facilities and capabilities.” The 12 month qualification programme was performed in-house at Siemens Subsea Excellence Centre in the UK. SpecTRON10 has successfully completed the test programme, which gives an enhanced DC capability for our SpecRON10 product range. Siemens Subsea has now strengthened its competency in the DC voltage field and developed a comprehensive and extensive DC test regime for qualifying wet-mate connectors.
