FOCUS ON CORNWALL

GLOBAL TAILOR MADE SERVICES

Insight Marine Projects Ltd is an independent marine hydrographic survey company offering a broad range of capabilities in survey, construction support, precise positioning and project management within the marine industry

PROJECTS

The company has a long track record in Marine Renewable Energy being involved with in excess of 14 tidal energy projects, seven wave energy projects and five offshore windfarms. Operating from their offices in Cornwall they provide tailor made services to the marine sector around the world covering a range of disciplines including construction support and hydrographic surveys.

Insight Marine also carried out site investigation work on the Gwynt-y-Mor Offshore Windfarm – the second largest offshore windfarm in the world.

LONG TERM SUPPORT Atlantis Resources

Long-term survey support was also provided for the installation and commissioning of MeyGen’s Phase 1A array of tidal generators in the Pentland Firth, Scotland. In such an aggressive tidal environment with depths of up to 40msw and very short working windows, it was essential to mobilise an equipment spread capable of meeting the exacting demands of the client.

The company used a variety of equipment and methodologies to ensure that time critical positioning tasks were carried out successfully each and every time.

CONCEPT NURSERY FOR DEVICE DEVELOPERS

FaBTest is an award-winning, pre-consented, 2.8km2

This nursery facility enables device developers to test components, concepts or full scale devices in a moderate wave climate, whist giving excellent accessibility to the device and benefitting from extensive nearby port infrastructure.

PRE-CONSENTED STATUS

FaBTest’s pre-consented status, which allows for up to three devices to be deployed concurrently, aims to provide a fast, flexible low risk and low cost solution for the testing of marine energy technologies, components, moorings and deployment procedures. The site offers water depths of 15m-50m and seabed types of rock, gravel and sand. The Site is leased from The Crown Estate and has a Marine Consent for testing, subject to permits issued by Falmouth Harbour Commissioners.

Operational support of the site, as well as ongoing monitoring and world leading research is provided by the Renewable Energy Group from the University of Exeter, based on the nearby Penryn campus. The lease and licence for the site have now been renewed, ensuring ongoing operation for another five years. As part of the new iteration of operation, the University of Exeter will be taking a more leading role in site management, with Falmouth Harbour Commissioners remaining a key project partner as lease and licence holder.

KEY INVESTMENT PRIORITY

The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership and Cornwall Council continue to recognise FaBTest as a key investment priority and a unique asset which can create economic benefits and market opportunities and

have provided interim funding to cover the transition period as the new business model is implemented.

DEPLOYMENTS

In 2017 the site welcomes Swansea based Marine Power Systems, who plan to deploy their WaveSub device over the summer and are also working with a number of other developers hoping to get on the water in 2017, 2018 and beyond. For prospective deployments, the site characteristics document has recently been updated following an additional ADCP deployment for current monitoring and ongoing wave data collection.

FaBTest FLEXIBILITY

Able to mobilise rapidly for projects around the world, Insight Marine are flexible in their approach to operating either independently or closely with a network of specialist companies on more complex projects
