FOCUS ON CORNWALL A UK DIVING FIRST

The Cornwall based subsea contractor Falmouth Divers Ltd was the first diving contractor to work on a renewable energy project in the UK

The company was selected to carry out all the diving works in support of foundation installation and cable installation on the Blyth Offshore wind turbines that were the first to go into the open sea.

MOVING FORWARD

The company were also selected many years later to undertake further work on the Blyth project which included the lay of a new export cable to a new route replacing the existing export cable that had become damaged by wave action. The new submarine cable route was selected allowing 75% of the new cable to be buried to 1m below the seabed with the remaining 25% clamped to the reef. On completion of the cable lay Falmouth Divers went on to remove the redundant submarine cable.

OTHER PROJECTS

The company then went on to work on the much publicised Horns Rev 1, the world’s first full scale offshore windfarm located on the Danish coast and North Hoyle, the first full scale windfarm in the UK. The company has also worked on the Barrow, Thanet, and Lincs projects and last year completed the balance of underwater construction work on London Array. With its extensive experience gained in over 39 years in the submarine power and telecoms industries, Falmouth Divers are increasingly being called on to assist renewable energy projects from shore end landing, cable protection and burial, personnel transfers and safety boat cover, cable debris clearance and consultancy services.

WAVE & TIDAL INDUSTRY

The company supported the Fred. Olsen device Bolt 2 throughout its time on the FaB Test site and has also supported Universities, device developers and other contractors on various projects at FaB Test, The South West Mooring Test Facility and the Wave Hub demonstration site. Falmouth Divers see wave and tidal being an increasing market in Cornwall as device developers reach testing and commercialisation. Having worked in over 56 countries around the world Falmouth Divers are also looking at the global marine renewables market as a potential for continued expansion.

Falmouth Divers INNOVATION CALL:

CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR WAVE ENERGY CONVERTERS

The Scottish Government funded body Wave Energy Scotland has already invested £15M in 51 separate collaboration projects arising from its three innovation funding calls for Power Take Off, Novel Wave Energy Converters and Structural Materials and Manufacturing Processes.
