FOCUS ON CORNWALL

DESIGN COLLABORATION A contractor’s view

“Developers of marine renewable energy devices should engage with industry early in the design process,” according to Paul Weston, Renewable Energy Technical Manager from global ship repair, conversion and marine specialist A&P Group.

Speaking at the RenewableUK Wave &

Tidal 2017 conference in London recently, Paul highlighted the value of a more collaborative way of working between wave and tidal device designers and industry – a relationship that can save significant build costs and unlock greater engineering expertise.

WE CAN ALSO

ENGAGE WITH DEVELOPERS TO SHARE OUR BEST PRACTICE AND PASS ON THE ENGINEERING KNOWLEDGE

Dave Watson PROVEN TRACK RECORD

A&P Group has a proven track record in achieving sizeable project savings for developers already, having delivered a £1.1m saving for Offshore Wave Energy Limited. Using in-house expertise, A&P Group was able to make geometry modifications to adapt material sizing and thereby lower waste material, re- configure transverse stiffening in the mid body of the vessel and reduce the number of construction techniques to achieve substantial savings. In a similar way, A&P Group helped Seatricity to secure £40k savings by revisiting its material selection.

OPPORTUNITY

Paul Weston, Renewable Energy Technical Manager for A&P Group said:

“Global competitors are catching up with the UK in the race to lead the international maritime industry. There’s a real opportunity for designers and developers to strengthen their position and harness the expertise of industry to speed up bringing products to market in a safe manner and lower their exposure to risk and cost too. “By assisting in the design and development procedure we are able to look at buildability and production engineering procedures to find genuine cost reductions and the earlier we are involved the more savings we can identify. We can also engage with developers to share our best practice and pass on the engineering knowledge and expertise needed to help retain the necessary engineering skills here in the UK.

VALUE

“Our value is in helping to cost engineer projects and help to deliver savings without compromising design or capability. It’s a compelling case and an invitation for developers to get in touch.”

FACILITY

Paul Weston is based at A&P Group’s Falmouth facility, which operates one of the world’s largest natural deep water harbours, three large graving docks, workshops and extensive alongside deep- water berthing, providing capacity for vessels up to 100,000 tonnes.
