CABLE PROTECTION/SCOUR MITIGATION HITTING THE GROUND RUNNING

Subsea asset and scour protection specialists Pipeshield International Limited have hit the ground running in 2017, developing and diversifying aplenty over the last 12 months

Increased activities in Renewables and Marine Civils projects has helped the company navigate through a slow period in the oil & gas sector.

PROJECT – ANTI SCOUR PROTECTION

Of the more significant projects completed at the beginning of 2017 was a major port stabilisation project in Dubai for major contractors BAM International. Pipeshield was awarded the contract to provide over 1,000 linear metres of anti-scour protection for the harbour wall at Terminal 4, Jebel Ali, operated by DP World. Upon design approval, Pipeshield quickly mobilised equipment and manufactured onsite. Materials and labour were sourced locally and project managed by the company. Delivered on time and on budget, BAM were provided with a solution that ticked all of the boxes technically, commercially and logistically.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Research and development plays an important part in Pipeshield’s success, rolling out many new products and services since the Lowestoft company’s establishment in 1999. With a focus on safety and installation, three new product lines were rolled out during 2016 which have been selling very well.

BIONIC SEAWEED FRONDS

Bionic seaweed (fronds) for anti-scour protection has been designed completely with these factors in mind. Compared to similar products the company’s fronded mattresses are 40kgs lighter. An advanced installation process means there’s no metal spool, reducing transport costs and returned spools. Used in conjunction with Pipeshield’s

concrete mattresses, structures and fabric formworks, fronds can be fitted to provide additional anti-scour and burial solutions. A recent example of this was the design and manufacture of several fronded ‘galoshes’ for Technip earlier in

the year. The concrete structures provide both support for crossings while the bionic seaweed encourages the build-up of sediment to generate natural burial of the pipeline.

PRECISION ROCK PLACEMENT (PRP)

The second product launch saw the introduction of PRP units to the company portfolio. Made in the UK, these durable rock bags come in 2Te and 4Te options and are used for both protection and stability across all sectors.

SUPERMAT

Lastly, the patented high payload ‘Supermat’ proved a revelation with their clients. The uprated concrete mattress can be used to deploy multiple mattresses. Used as a sacrificial speedloader, the mattress is eventually

left in situ as a standard mattress, saving deck space and equipment hire charges.

INCREASING GLOBAL NETWORK

It wasn’t just new products that Pipeshield introduced in 2016. New manufacturing locations included Norway, Mexico and Abu Dhabi (quayside facilities), these adding to an existing network that includes the UK, UAE, KSA, Azerbaijan, Qatar, South Africa, Asia Pacific and China. Further expansion into Eastern Europe, Australasia, South America and US forms part of the company’s long term strategy moving forwards.
