Forthcoming Events
By Keith Nicol
Spring is in the air and with it, in true Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and Peter Lawford style, it’s time for those Easter Parades. There are also two Red Days, Public Holidays this month, Maundy Thursday, 13th April and Good Friday, 14th April, so watch out for these.
At some point or another, almost every town and village have parades, with daily processions and events happening in such places as Pilar de la Horadada, Elche, Alicante,
Orihuela,
Cartagena and Torrevieja. Easter Sunday falls on 16th April, so the main events are usually on Good Friday. In Torrevieja, the ‘paseo’ starts at 10pm in front of the Inmaculada Church, in the town square, an event that attracts thousands of people every year and is designated an event of National Interest.
Being one of the most multicultural cities in Spain, in Torrevieja, once again the 100+ members of the International Cofradia Of Jesus In The Garden Of Olives will be taking part. This prestigious group has been followed by the media across the Spanish speaking world and has been much admired and respected by most of its Spanish counterparts since its inception in 2005. With thousands of Spanish and many other nationalities filling the streets of Torrevieja for these splendid processions the atmosphere is something to behold for those who are lucky enough to be a part of this moving Spanish Tradition. The main parade on Good Friday starts at 8pm and features all of the cofradias in the city. The Easter Parades in Pilar de la Horadada are also well worth seeing. This year they start on Friday 7th April and continue almost daily until

Easter Sunday on the 16th April. Cartagena’s parades also start on the 7th April.
Staying in Cartagena, leading up to the parades you can enjoy visiting their 10th Tapas Route and the 6th Ruta del Asiático. This is running now and finishes on the 2nd April. It’s great value for money with tapa and a drink for 2.50€ at any of the 40 participating bars, cafes and restaurants. Pick up a route card from the tourist office, have it stamped when you have a tapa and once you have 6 stamps, drop off your card to receive a free entrance into one of the ‘Cartagena Puerto de Culturas’ establishments and for adults, possibly win Amstel Merchandise.
Almoradi celebrate their 6th Olla Gastronomy until 9th April. You still have time to enjoy a specially prepared menu for just 18€, not including drinks. Saturday 1st April: Restaurante Martin, Sunday 2nd April: Estacion de Autobuses, Saturday 8th April: El Rincon de Maria, Sunday 9th April. Bar Murciano.
Something that we are all still awaiting confirmation of is the moving of Torrevieja’s market, the largest Friday market in Spain, from its present location to the new purpose built area beside the water park and OZ disco, close to Torrevieja’s Sports City. The buses have been organised, the area all landscaped and set out and a promise from the new Government that the market will move before Easter, which could be 7th April, although technically, they could choose 14th April, Good Friday. More updates on this next month.
For fans of classic, American and exotic cars, don’t miss the Ace Cafe gathering outside La Torre Hotel in Los Montesinos on the 1st Sunday of each month. The event attracts upwards of 100 cars each month and it’s free for all to participate by bringing along your pride and joy, or to visit. Cars are on display from about 10.30am to 12.30pm. The Moonshiners have their Classic and Custom Rod event at the Miroil Garage in Catral on the last Sunday of the month between 11am and 1pm. Admission is free.
