WWF Fundraising Surprise!

Primary 7 pupil Ella Ritch, completed a tremendous amount of work raising money for World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Scotland in December. WWF representatives were so inspired by Ella’s hard work and generosity they visited Newton, to personally to recognise Ella, and celebrate the work of all children involved.

Ella wrote letters, organised a school ballot to choose which animals to adopt and raised funds creating crafts for the school’s Christmas market. Ella also made two superb PowerPoints and shared them at assembly and around all classes in the school. All of Ella’s work, teamed with the support of P.4 Christmas Post enterprise inspired pupils to raise enough money to adopt two animals - a Hawksbill turtle and Amur leopard.

At a special assembly on Monday 23rd January, Ella was surprised by Lisa Talbot from WWF Scotland and a visiting representative, Mike Olendo, from WWF Kenya who heads up the turtle conservation work for WWF Kenya in Lamu. Mike gave a talk to the whole school about the importance of conserving the mysterious marine turtle and presented Ella with a beautiful photo of a turtle, framed in a hand carved wooden frame. Mike also brought along a special gift for the school, a handmade boat made by local fishermen and brought all the way from Kenya.

Special Burns Day Celebrations Newton Primary School

Primary 1, 3 and 7 were delighted to enjoy a visit from one of our parents, Mr Glendinning, to help them celebrate Robert Burns Day. Mr Glendinning arrived wearing his kilt and children were delighted to watch him perform a selection of Burns poems including a superb recital of Tam O’Shanter and Address to a Haggis. He talked to P.1 about the different parts of his kilt and they learned some new words including sporran and skean dhu. All classes learned about the traditions of a Burns Supper and Primary 7 were lucky enough to benefit from Mr Glendinning’s expertise to help them with their upcoming performance (22nd February) of ‘Great Scot!’

Badminton Success Primary Schools Badminton Quaich

80

Competition Primary 6 and 7 pupils took part recently in the Stirling Primary Schools Badminton Quaich Competition at The Peak in Stirling. Newton ‘Team A’ and ‘Team B’ took part in a pooled event where children competed in singles, doubles and mixed doubles matches. Newton ‘Team A’ were delighted to qualify for the Central Schools Quaich which took place on Friday 3rd February. After another competitive round of games ‘Team A’ qualified for the next round of the competition at regional level which will take place later in February. We are delighted that the children have worked so hard to prepare for this event and coaches were delighted with the excellent team work and sportsmanship shown throughout each of the events. Children practice on a weekly basis as a part of clubs run in the school by parent volunteer coaches, Mr Burns and Mrs McKendrick and P.E Specialist, Mrs McLachlan. We’d like to thank them for their support in preparing the children for each event and also say a big ‘thank you’ to Active Stirling for organising the events for the children!
