Plant of the Month: Sunfl owers

Sunfl ower seeds are mainly sown from mid-April to the end of May and will fl ower in August. Planting sunfl ower seeds is a great activity for children, and looking to see how tall it might grow when selecting seed variety is part of the fun. Seeds can be sown directly into the ground where they are to fl ower, in a sunny position. Ensure the soil is weed-free and raked fi nely.

Sunfl ower seeds need little maintenance, apart from some light watering and thinning out when the seedlings start to shoot up, but beware of hungry slugs and snails nibbling the new seedlings.

As the sunfl ower begins to grow tall, the stem will need support – use a cane and tie loosely with string; you might need a step ladder if the weather is favourable!
