transformers, hydropower equipment and mining equipment. Roger Kündig at KOG said: “The future
will probably see less heavy and over-dimensional cargoes moving out of Switzerland, rather than more. The problem is that production costs here are massively higher than nearby countries. The engineering competence is here, the decision-makers are still here, but the physical transports will move away.” Looking ahead to 2017, Kündig said: “We
see a few jobs moving, which we have our toes in, and I think this may be a slow start to hopefully better times. “We were always a company that did not really have borders we could not cross, so we were picking up business from other European countries.”
Diversification KOG is looking to broaden its approach, he said. “We have been rather dependent on the oil and gas market. Our task is to establish new markets and find new clients which are not so dependent on the oil price.” He saw opportunities in other power generation projects, including with engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors in the waste-to- energy sector. “Having said that, KOG is just
starting a major oil and gas-related project that involves moving 20,000 tonnes of cargo, mainly from Switzerland and Germany, to Tunisia. This project, which will see cargo moved during 2017 and 2018, involves shipping cargo into Gabes and then using heavy haulage equipment to move it a few hundred kilometres into the desert.” In general, he said, KOG is
looking to streamline its operational processes. “We try to be a medium-size, flexible player that is also open to manpower supply to our clients,” he said. “There is an increasing requirement in Europe for commercial and administration personnel and we have a few very flexible people that we provide on a case-by-case basis. Clients may not have sufficient manpower during peaks and we send people to support them in project implementation.”
