When it comes to anti-ageing, we spend a fortune during our lifetime on facial products to prevent, protect and repair the skin. However, the ageing process isn’t just restricted to this part of the body alone. The hands, they say, are the real giveaway to a person’s true age; yet often fail to receive the same amount of tender loving care.
Even though your clients may diligently follow a set skin care routine, both morning and night, many can be found guilty of not paying the same amount of attention to their hands and nails. As a result, they can be one of the first places on our body to show those pesky tell-tale signs of ageing such as age spots, wrinkles, prominent veins, dryness and brittle nails.
The main cause for premature ageing is often cited as exposure to UV rays. Your clients may be applying creams and lotions containing SPFs to their face, but using these on their hands will also help to regulate and prevent further damage to their skin, especially when it comes to preventing sun spots and pigmentation.
During discussions with your clients, you may also uncover additional lifestyle and environmental factors contributing to their
hand and nail woes. Perhaps they enjoy arduous hobbies such as gardening and outdoor sports, have a hard-wearing manual occupation or simply use household cleaning products on a daily basis – all these aspects can accumulate to take their toll.
Anti-ageing ingredients To capitalise on the growing demand for anti-ageing hand and nail care, offering a standalone treatment specifically aimed at targeting the common complaints is sure to entice clients. Alternatively, you could opt to customise your existing manicure protocol to include the latest anti-ageing hand and nail products, tailored around your client’s specific needs. As with treating facial skin, the key to selecting the right options is to look out for those super anti- ageing ingredients.
“Vitamin E, Jojoba, Sweet Almond and Rice oil nourish and heal the skin to promote nail growth and keep nails supple,” says Charlotte Lowe of Jessica Education. “AHA reduces fine lines and wrinkles, as well as lightens the skin’s surface, Glycolic acid renews skin cells by sloughing away any dead skin [whilst] Sodium Hyaluronate increases moisture levels by opening pores and allowing the products to penetrate deeper into the skin.”
“Wheat Protein has elastic and binding properties which increase skin firmness, Wheat Germ extract is high in vitamin E which enhances blood circulation, [and] Protein KSW (Keratin, Soy and Wheat Protein) increases moisture levels,” Charlotte continues. “Jojoba and vitamin E heal, condition and strengthen, Calcium and Aloe Vera protect against nail breakage [and] Echinacea reinforces nails and aids the healing process.”
To further aid absorption of the products used, why not include heated mitts or a paraffin treatment in your anti-ageing mani. Not only do these help your chosen products to penetrate deeper into the epidermis, they additionally serve to provide a luxurious and relaxing element to the overall experience. Massages, masks and exfoliators can also help in making the skin and nails more responsive during treatment.
Hand out your advice The main reason as to why so many of your clients may be a little neglectful when it comes to caring for their hands and nails is simply down to lack of information. So make sure you impart your wisdom on the advantages of treating this body area correctly. Explain the products and their benefits while you are using them during treatment as this will then gently ease clients into purchasing home care items based on your recommendations.
“Advice should be integrated throughout the whole treatment, from a thorough consultation pre-manicure plus educating clients while using products,” suggests Charlotte. “The first bit of advice should be implemented during the consultation (before you begin the treatment) when you are analysing your clients’ nails.
“During the treatment you should also educate clients on the products you are using, the ingredients and their benefits. At the end of the treatment ensure you give your client the correct homecare advice and recommend products that will reduce signs of ageing.”
Recommend your clients use hand crèmes and lotions with SPF to help protect and prevent from sun exposure.
