With a recent boom in the male grooming industry, Olivia Slack discovers the importance of promoting a good skin care regime to your male clients.

The male grooming industry has been on the rise in recent years, with men prioritising their appearance and the products they use. No longer are men ridiculed for attending a Spa or salon for a facial or manicure, and male grooming products have seen a significant increase in sales.

However, not every man is savvy when it comes to skin care, so they may still need a little help in understanding what treatments and products are available to them. There has never been a better time to cater for the male market in your salon.

The right product From cleansers and moisturisers, to shaving after-care, many professional brands have their own male-specific collections targeted to their skin care needs.

For example, the Réponse Homme range from Matis has been specially formulated for men, using extracts from a perennial climbing plant called Centella Asiatica, which has soothing, repairing and regenerating properties that are ideal for male skin. And with the popularity of facial hair – groomed beards and expertly styled moustaches – The Refinery, an expert team of MasterBarbers, are putting to the test their 15 years’ experience in shaving and beard maintenance to provide male clients with a grooming range that targets everyday skin problems such as irritation, dry skin and ingrown hairs.

Male skin is different to a females, in that it contains more collagen and produces more sebum, so the appearance of wrinkles is less likely in men than women.
