Things to remember… When offering prom packages either in your salon or as a mobile therapist, you will need to familiarise yourself with your insurance policies. The standard procedure when it comes to offering treatments to younger clients is that anyone under the age of 16 must have a parent or guardian present that has given their consent for the treatment to go ahead.

Be aware of safeguarding issues – if there’s a parent or guardian on hand, it ensures there’s a third party in the room at all times to witness the service you’re providing, along with the nature of the conversation you’re having. Likewise, it also safeguards the child from being spoken to inappropriately.

When the treatments are booked, discuss exactly what services you will be offering with the clients’ parent or guardian to ensure they are happy to continue.

Marketing If you’re offering prom packages as a new service, it can be a little hard to know where to promote them. The first thing you must understand is exactly how to target your chosen audience, and in some cases, your target audience will be their parents or guardians.

Ask clients that already visit your salon if they have any children, or know any girls who would be interested in having their prom make-up done.

Keep some leaflets and promotional material on display in your salon that’s in a place where customers will see. Keeping them on the front desk next to the card machine is a great idea, as customers will usually pick leaflets up as they’re waiting to pay.

The likelihood is that once you’ve offered a treatment to a teenager in the area, her friends will ask where she got her make-up done, spreading news of your services through word-of-mouth to not only classmates, but teachers, parents and beyond.

If you have a budget to place an advertisement, then you could also spread the word in local newspapers or magazines, and have flyers designed that

Stock up your nail polish collection with a variety of colours, along with a mixture of both standard polish and gel.

you can distribute to local businesses related to your offerings, for example; the dress store where your customers have bought their prom dress from.

Danielle Bookatz, Brand Manager for jane iredale says: “If you want to cash in on this special occasion it’s important to promote yourself where teenage girls will look for them – on social media. Make sure you have lots of visual examples of your work not just services and prices. If you don’t offer a hair service, team up with a local hairdressers so you can both offer clients the full package.”

“Social media is free so I would always advertise on this no matter what,” says Audrey Heffernan of Hennessy Hair and Beauty. “You have nothing to lose; put up a competition to ‘like and share to be in with a chance to win one of these prom offers’. This always works so well and really hits a lot of people.”

“Keep your website and social media up to date with an image gallery to give teens inspiration and confidence in your skills,” adds Kirstie. “Teens want to feel that the product or service being offered has real value in their lives, and the cost effective way to do this is to connect on their level and treat them with respect. The more valued you make them feel, the more interested they will be and thus the more likely they will be to book your services.

“Ask teens to post about their treatments, encouraging them to share their experiences with other teens – contemporary endorsement is a powerful tool.”

In summary Offering prom packages can be extremely rewarding. Not only is it a great earner for your salon, but it is a great way of getting to know potential new clients; girls who are just turning 16 may wish to book in for treatments in the future.

Knowing how to market your pamper parties is important; it ensures you reach the right audience and provides you with a medium to promote any other treatments you may be offering in your salon; for example, the mothers who bring their children along to your salon may be drawn to your retail options, or may wish to book in for their own treatment whilst they wait.

Before you begin to offer your services, make sure you’re fully prepared and that your salon has the capacity to host not only single treatments, but also any group bookings you may receive. It’s a great opportunity for your salon; and what’s more – it can be fun too!
