INTEL Isabella Miller, Managing Director, John Lewis Partnership

Each issue we ask a major business figure what technology they use to gather the information they need to keep their finger on the pulse

Virtual reality will be top of the Christmas wish list

For films and gaming, the technology generates realistic images and sounds W

ith Christmas nearly upon us, we asked Isabella Miller, Managing

Director, John Lewis Partnership in Glasgow, to give her view on technology.

WHAT TECHNOLOGY (FROM GADGETS TO SOFTWARE, INCLUDING APPS) MAKES YOUR WORKING LIFE EASIER?

Te technology that helps me most at work is mobile technology, like the John Lewis

app. It allows me to scan items and put them on my wish list. Te ‘my John Lewis’ card is connected to the app and I simply need to shake my phone and the card appears so it’s one less card to carry in my wallet. Te best part is the kitchen drawer that keeps all my store and online shopping receipts available in the app – now that definitely makes my life easier.

WE SEE THAT JOHN LEWIS IS GOING BIG ON VR THIS

CHRISTMAS? HAVE YOU TRIED IT AND WHAT DID YOU THINK?

I have tried virtual reality and seeing is believing – it’s an amazing experience. I am looking forward to the Oculus Riſt arriving in the store – it’s going to be huge for Christmas. For films and gaming, the virtual reality experience is going to be like no other.

WHAT WEBSITES/APPS/ MAGAZINES/NEWSPAPERS DO YOU TURN TO FOR BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE?

I read a wide range of retail publications. Retail Week and Verdict Digest are my go-to publications. And of course, the Chamber’s magazine, Glasgow Business.

WHAT BOOK SHOULD EVERYONE IN BUSINESS BE READING?

I love Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff by Richard Carlson. It’s full of common sense.

WHAT DO YOU DO THAT HELPS YOU BOOST YOUR PRODUCTIVITY OR SAVE TIME?

My iPad is the biggest time saver. I get all my emails done morning and night on the train which means I can be out and about in the shop during the day.

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

Trust your intuition!
