Four centuries of tradition were honoured in a historic ceremony recently, as the Trades House of Glasgow elected Keith Brown OBE as its Deacon Convener. While leading the organisation for the next year, he also assumes the role of Third Citizen of Glasgow.


His election was marked by a dinner in the Trades Hall with guest of honour HRH The Earl of Wessex. Lord Provost Sadie Docherty, then Lord Mayor- elect of the City of London Alderman Andrew Parmley and STV Chairman Baroness Ford of Cunninghame also attended the dinner. Other guests from Glasgow and cities across the UK represented a variety of institutions, including the civic, business, academia and armed services communities. Keith is a former Managing


Director of Morgan Stanley and was also a Non-Executive Director of BAE Systems. As well as a Pastmaster of the Worshipful Company of Coopers in London, he is a Late Deacon of the Incorporation of Coopers of Glasgow. Also elected in this, the


411th year of the organisation, is Tom McInally, who will serve alongside Keith as Collector of Trades House for the year. Tom is Managing Director of Glasgow-based planning and development consultants McInally Associates.


Senior members of contemporary Thai restaurant Chaophraya swapped their suits for aprons to spend a day serving in front- of-house roles at its Glasgow site recently. The stunt, which coincided


Kiltwalk marches on with more than £840,000 raised in 2016

he Kiltwalk will be back in 2017 aſter raising £840,000 so far for Scotland’s


children’s charities – and next year even more people will be able to benefit. At an event in Glasgow


recently, philanthropist and backer of the Kiltwalk, Sir Tom Hunter, issued a call to action to Scotland’s heroes as he officially launched the 2017 Kiltwalk. It was also announced that,


due to significant demand from non-children’s charities, the Kiltwalk would open up to all Scotish charities.

Kiltwalk will return to Glasgow on 30 April, Aberdeen on 4 June and Edinburgh on 17 September, with a new event coming to Dundee on 20 August. Among the good causes


set to benefit from the event opening to all is the John Hartson Foundation. Te Celtic, Arsenal,


West Ham and Wales legend started the charity aſter his own batle with testicular cancer, which is set to be boosted by the generous support of Kiltwalkers.

with National Waiters Day, was held to highlight the importance of front-of-house and service roles, in order to promote them as viable long-term career options. In a true reversal of roles,


an open invitation was sent to front-of-house staff from casual dining restaurants across the city, inviting them to dine at the restaurant for free, using the Thai Baht to tip the staff on how they thought the service was. Six members of Chaophraya’s


senior team helped out with waiting on the tables. National Waiters Day is


affiliated with the organisation Springboard and its Front of House Festival. This has been created to promote the food and beverage sector, and showcase the industry as a vibrant and dynamic place to work, inspiring young people to join the sector.


New training accreditation for Cornerstone


Scottish social care charity, Cornerstone, has been named as an approved training centre of the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) meaning it will be able to provide nationally recognised management qualifications to staff. The charity, which is already


accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) to deliver Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs), is now able to deliver the ILM Level 3 Award,


Certificate and Diploma in Leadership and Management. Cornerstone has built a solid


reputation for the quality of its Learning and Development (L&D) programmes and has received multiple awards in recent years for its professional development schemes – most recently being awarded Investors in Young People, Investors in People Gold Standard, while Hilary Bennison, Cornerstone’s Quality and Performance Manager, recently received the


prestigious QS Ambassador Award from Quality Scotland. Earlier this year, Cornerstone


began enrolling managers and team leaders on a 52-week ILM approved programme, called Inspiring Team Excellence. Cornerstone provides care and support services for adults, young people and children across Scotland who live with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and other support needs.
