The Boxmasters Boys and Girls and the World (NDR Records) The Boxmasters are
one of the most prolific groups of the 21st cen- tury, churning out dou-
ble albums with the frequency of the finest ham radio. Fact is, they have several albums completed that have not yet been released, which the band intends to rollout as time goes by, the first of which was Providence last year. All good stuff. The L.A. based Boxmasters consists of gui-
tarist JD Andrew, vocalist Bud Thornton and keyboard man Teddy Andreadis. On the road, the guys bring along some hot shot sides men, but the studio work is essentially the three amigos. For those who may be unfamiliar with the boys in the band, I’ll give you a little primer. J.D. Andrew is a Grammy Award-winning
recording engineer whose credits include The Rolling Stones, Kanye West, The Pussycat Dolls, Will Kimbrough, Tommy Womack, Guy Clark, and more. He co-founded The Boxmas- ters in 2007, and co-writes most of the songs with Bud. Teddy Andreadis has performed as a tour-
ing member of bands from Guns N' Roses to Carole King, Alice Cooper, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, B.B. King and others. He has been a long-time counselor and mentor at Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp. "Bud" has recorded four solo albums, Pri-
vate Radio, Edge Of The World, Hobo, and Beautiful Door. He has performed on numer- ous recordings including Warren Zevon’s Grammy-winning album The Wind, the leg- endary Earl Scruggs’ Earl Scruggs and Friends, and Anchored In Love: A Tribute to June Carter
Cash. Most recently Thornton co-wrote the song “The Middle of Nowhere” with Tony Joe White on his album Rain Crow. (Oh, and you may recognize him as the
Oscar and Golden Globe winning actor as well.) Boys and Girls delivers two more CDs filled
with goodness. “Of course You’re a Leo” is a good one. Matter of fact, as one who was mar- ried to a professional astrologer for many years, it stands out as one of my favorite tracks. The music has a funky little element and Bud delivers the vocals with an extra-cool air, along with some excellent lead guitar from J.D. “Plain White Paper” is another standout track, this one about writer’s block. Well. Either that or a metaphor for feeling emotionally empty. Been there, done that. “I Dig a Waitress” is a seriously fun rocker. True skirt-chasing Boxmasters. Another fa- vorite track. “Rain” is a good one too. The boys truly have that ‘60’s jingle-jangle guitar thing down pat. I love it. Same goes for the upbeat “I’ve Got an Edge” and the excellent “Look Up.” One song on the album was espe- cially anticipated. “Desperation Parade” has been a staple of The Boxmasters’ live shows for a while now. A great song I was happy to get my ears wrapped around. All together there are twenty tracks on
Boys & Girls. To coin a really tired cliché, simply because it is an apt description in this case, it’s “all killer, no filler.”
