were in Austin to record my upcoming EP, we both asked my producer Billy Eli to take us to get some authentic Tex-Mex food. I was quite surprised when we pulled into a strip mall. My mind was running wild. These are the usual locations where we find the generic Mexican restaurants in my home state of


I ordered the enchiladas combo with


spanish rice and beans ($10.50), but it wasn’t at all like the so-called Mexican food you get here in South Carolina. These were real en- chiladas, the kind I remember my Aunt Mar- jorie DeLavega preparing for us when we visited her in San Jose, California when I was a kid. The real deal, and so tasty. Along with the enchilada I was served a genuine hard shell taco, and again, the taste difference is astounding. Too bad the generic Mexican restaurants around my home don’t serve the real deal. I’d be in there more often. As an added bonus, the waiter hooked me up with two miniature versions of their famous Stuffed Av- ocados. They are a mini- version of Trudy’s most popular item, fried, cracker crumb breaded mini avocados stuffed with spiced chicken and cheese, served with chipolte, suiza and queso for dipping. I ate about half of my food or less, having already drank too much beer, and made the mistake of getting a mouth full of


South Carolina. I pictured an authentic Tex- Mex restaurant as a stand alone, adobe build- ing, very ornate, very Southwestern. It was the whole “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” thing.


The restaurant is huge. It’s housed in a


former night club, with multi-level floors and the whole discotheque feel. It was very com- fortable from the start, and our waiter was great. He went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were all pleased. We or- dered up a round of Lone Star beers and munched on some chips and salsa. Billy’s wife Pam soon joined us


jalapeno peppers at some point. Yes, I got sick, but it was my own fault. As I have gotten older I can’t handle extremely hot peppers. All I know is, the food was the best tasting Tex-Mex I have ever, repeat, ever had. Joey had the grown-up size version of


the Stuffed Avocado plate ($11.50) and says he throughly enjoyed it. I don’t recall what everyone else orderered, but it was obvious that we all enjoyed it greatly. Honest to God Tex-Mex. Ain’t nothing like it!
