ONE FOR LARRY

By Michael Buffalo Smith It was truly a beautiful thing. Hundreds

gathered at The Crazy Bull in Macon, Georgia on September 22, 2016 to play music and auction off collectables to help brother Larry Howard, founding guitarist for the iconic Southern Rock band Grinderswitch. Larry and his family have been having quite a tough

Walden, Chank Middleton, Paul Hornsby, Tommy Talton, Bonnie Bramlett, Michael Yanko, Willie Perkins, Scott Boyer… so many! Of course I was seated at a table with two of the best, Dave and Peggy Peck! I was the show opener, and took to the

stage at 6 PM. The master of ceremonies was my dear friend Bruce Brookshire of Doc Holi- day fame. Bruce gave me a great introduction and I took off playing a set comprised of mostly original songs, other than my version of George McCorkle’s “Fire On the Mountain” and Steve Young’s “Lonesome, Onry and Mean.” It was a blast. Next up was a very cool set from - Big Mike

time following his diagnosis with cancer, and everyone in attendance had their hearts in the right place for sure. Everyone was giving it their all, none more so than Lisa Watkins Meyers, who worked tirelessly throughout the evening as a promoter and auctioneer, to name just a couple of her jobs this evening. I found myself drooling over a lot of the auc- tion stuff, as usual. There were rare items from Capricorn Records (I did score a check made out to Twiggs Lyndon from Willie Perkins, so that was cool!) – many signed gui- tars, Charlie Daniels fiddles, a Chuck Leavell toy piano signed, Kirk West professional pho- tographic prints, backstage passes, items from The Walking Dead, Billy Bob Thornton, just tons of great stuff! At every turn I ran into friends like Alan

Ventimiglia, Hal Register & Robert Johnson. I have been a fan of Big Mike for years, and Hal and Robert are top of the line players. It was a great set, including a rousing “She Caught the Katie” and a rocking version of Billy Joe Shaver’s “Georgia On a Fast Train.” Good stuff.
