get the trash on day three. One day I called the front desk and asked for the room to be cleaned, to which the girl said, “We clean the rooms on Fridays.” What? I managed to get fresh towels on day four. I went to the office, and the girl was obviously put out with me for asking questions. She put her hands on her hips and raised her voice, “Sir! You act as if this is a motel! We are not a motel! We are an extended stay!” So I suppose part of it was my own fault for thinking we’d get turn down service each day. Still, if I were the manage- ment, I’d try and keep the customer happy, not confront them and drive them away. So that was our motel. I mean, our “extended stay.” Not on Buffalo’s recommended list. Saturday would be bass guitar day. The


day started with Billy driving us to a place called Eggs & Groovy that is like a food truck meets a mobile home affair, where you park and walk up to place your order. There are a handful of picnic tables, and customers out the yin yang. We ordered our breakfast and took it to the studio with it. Well, the truth is, both Joey and I had pretty much finished by the time we arrived at Jim’s house. It was good stuff, by the way. I began to see a pat-


everything ready to go. Michael showed up right on time, and once a few adjustments were made on the drum kit, we started with the first song. All they wanted to do was get the drums down so that we could cut Michael loose. The work came fast and very profession- ally. I had four songs, and the drum tracks for all four were completed by lunch break at 1 PM. Billy’s plan was for Joey to do the bass parts after lunch. I would head out with Widget


(Charlie Gouveia) and give them room to work, just Billy, Jim and Joey. My phone had gotten broken somehow


when going through airport security, and Widget looked up a phone repair shop. The guys at the shop were real nice – as one usu- ally is when making money – and had my phone fixed (at least we thought it was, but that’s a story for another day) in 30 minutes.
