is very cool, but the real star of Threadgill’s is the food. They offer a wide variety of home cooked delights, from steaks ro meatloaf, ham, fried Mississippi catfish, tilapia, fried oysters or shrimp, and every vegetable you can imagine - green beans, broccoli, aspara- gus, butter beans, mashed potatoes, corn - the list is endless. Threadgills is truly a historic little

restaurant. Housed inside the old Gulf gas station opened by Kenneth Threadgill in 1933, Threadgills became a favorite late-night hangout for after hours drinking, gambling and jamming after obtaining the first beer li- cense in Travis County.During the ‘60’s Threadgill’s was a haven for both rednecks and hippies, and the Wednesday night hoot- enannies were a perfect showcase for live music. The mix of country, rock and blues began to morph into something that would later come to be known as “cosmic cowboy” music. One of the regular musicians to per- form at Threadgill’s was Janis Joplin, and many folks visit Threadgill’s simply because of that fact. Threadgill’s closed in 1974. but in 1980 Eddie Wilson, the man responsible for Armadillo World Headquarters, reopened Threadgills on its original site as a restaurant. Today there’s plenty of Janis memora- bilia lining the walls of the restaurant, which

A big one, topped with peppercorn crusted steak and fresh bleu cheese crumbles. Very tasty. And there were no complaints from my buddy Joey’s side of the table as he took on one of Threadgill’s specialties, their Chicken Fried Steak ($14.95). It’s certified Angus top sirloin, hand dipped and golden fried, topped with cream gravy and a choice of two vegetables. Oh yes, it smelled like country fried heaven. Like I said before, Threadgill’s has

whatever you need, from burgers to chicken, beef, pork or vegetarian. many great appetiz- ers, deserts, entrees and beverages. Next time you are in Austin, see a little piece of history and enjoy some seriously good southern cooking. Visit Threadgill’s. Dang! They are good!
