Meatballs in sauce
As certain members of our family eat a lot of pasta, this is a big hit in our house.
Meatball ingredients 4 eggs, beaten ½ cup water 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons dried minced onion flakes
garlic powder, to taste salt, to taste
ground black pepper, to taste 1½ kilos minced beef 1 kilo minced pork 1 (400g) package Italian seasoned bread crumbs
Sauce ingredients
800g canned crushed tomatoes 400g canned tomato puree
1 (500g) bottle smokey flavored barbeque sauce 1 (225g) can crushed pineapple 1 cup brown sugar 1 (400g) bottle ketchup
2 tablespoons dried minced onion flakes garlic powder, taste salt, to taste
½ teaspoon ground black pepper, to taste
1. In a large bowl, combine eggs and Worcestershire sauce. Season with 2 tablespoons onion flakes, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Mix in minced beef, minced pork and bread crumbs. Shape into meatballs, and set aside.
2. In a very large pot over medium heat, combine crushed tomatoes, tomato puree, barbeque sauce, pineapple, brown sugar, and ketchup. Season to taste with onion flakes, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and let simmer.
3. Heat a large heavy frying pan over medium heat. Cook meatballs until evenly brown on all sides. Carefully place into sauce, and simmer for at least an hour.
4. Serve with your favourite pasta.
