Who Cares Wins! Written by Good Care Group Carer Jackie Maple.
The hiring of care workers normally resident in Spain to work in England has been a growing phenomenon on The Costa Blanca for the last decade.
Having taken early retirement and moving to Spain in 2003, I soon realised that I missed a vocational challenge.
Having nursed my mother through a long battle against cancer I knew I had an aptitude for caring, and although I did not realise it at the time, care work was very much in my DNA, having been a wife, a mother, and a grandmother it came pretty naturally to me.
Browsing the local media one day, I came across an advertisement for The Good Care Group; this was the start of a journey that has taken me into a brand new career that has brought me an enormous amount of joy and satisfaction. I was impressed by the values, training and commitment of the Good Care Group to provide excellent 24 hour live in care for UK clients.
I had nothing to lose so I telephoned, and then attended a local interview and found myself on the week long induction programme after meeting the selection criteria.
I was assigned a placement with a lovely couple who both needed my
care. Slowly I built trust and friendship not just with the clients themselves, but with their close family and friends, this was very rewarding for me.
I found something within me that I never knew existed before - a natural gift and I would like to think that those last days were the best they could possibly have been for her. Under the circumstances - we did everything we could think of to enhance her life right to the end.
Through empathy and compassion, coupled with my work based training and company support network, I flourished in my new career.
Their daughter said “that I had restored order to their chaotic lives” and to me that was the best compliment anyone could have given me. So I really believe ‘Who Cares Wins’.
