Perhaps you’ve thought about getting a hearing aid, but you’re worried about how it will look or whether it will really help.

There are indeed many different types of hearing aid available, all with their own names and descriptions, with their own confusing acronyms, and they all vary a great deal in price, size, special features and the way they’re placed in your ear.

So if you are selecting a hearing aid for the first time, how, really, are you going to know which of a completely in the canal (CIC), or an in-the-canal (ITC), or an in-the-ear (ITE), or a behind-the-ear (BTE), or a receiver-in-canal (RIC), or a receiver-in-the-ear (RITE) type of hearing aid is right for you?

Generally speaking, all hearing aids work in a similar way, with a built-in microphone that picks up sound, which is processed electronically inside the hearing aid. The resulting ‘signals’ are then passed on to a receiver - like a tiny loudspeaker - where they are converted back into louder sounds that you can

hear. Most hearing aids are digital, and all are powered with a hearing aid battery. But oh, there are so many different types...

The very best way to make sure that you select absolutely the right hearing aid for you is to meet with a reputable audiologist. On the Costa Blanca there is nobody better than Richard Sykes HAD FSHAA who has 20 years of experience, is a Partner of The Health Care & Professionals Council and a Fellow of the British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists.
