ADVERTORIAL
TACKLING THE GROWING PROBLEM OF MALNUTRITION M
alnutrition is highly prevalent in hospitals and nursing homes, even
in industrial countries like the U.K. Depending on the methods being used to monitor, and the group being investigated, the prevalence is found to be between ten and 60 per cent. Groups in risk of being malnourished are the elderly, those with dementia, single, the disabled, people living in psychiatric wards, drug addicts and patients with chronic disease like cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis as well as heart- and lung disease.
Malnutrition increases the risk of complications, infections, exacerbates physical and mental function, reduces quality of life, delays remission and increases mortality. Malnourished patients in hospitals may increase their hospital stay three times, compared to a well-nourished patient.
Studies have also shown that nutritional status may worsen during stay in the institutions. This increases the need of home-care, visits to the doctor and re-emissions to hospitals.
Prolonged stays in hospitals and institutions have economic consequences. A study done in two separate hospitals in Portugal has shown that patients who are at risk of being malnourished when admitted to the hospital costs between 200- 1500 euros extra per patient. The British Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (BAPEN) has estimated that treatment of patients who are malnourished costs more than seven billion pounds per year in Great Britain. This corresponds to ten per cent of the total health costs. The costs associated with undernourishment were twice as high when compared to the costs associated to overweight.
Malnutrition is treatable. The use of
proper nutritional treatment will give economic benefits, but also improve quality of life and survival in several disease groups.
Oral nutritional supplements like EnergieShake® are frequently used to treat malnutrition. Many patients experience it easier to drink nutritionally dense oral supplements, compared to solid food when sick. It may increase the total intake of energy and nutrients, and has shown effective results to increase weight in malnourished patients. Patients who are malnourished on admission to hospital have longer hospital stays, higher risk of death, need more help at discharge and have a much higher risk of complications and death after discharge.
Similarly, malnourished out-patients need more doctor visits and more home care than those who have a satisfactory nutritional intake. They are also more likely to require significant hospitalization. There is a great need to use energy/nutrient dense diet in combination with nutritional supplements for people at nutritional risk. Figures from Denmark, the Netherlands, UK and USA show that we can reduce the length of stay in hospital with a minimum of 20 per cent for those who are assessed and treated for malnutrition.
EnergieShake® is a high energy powdered nutritional supplement with added carbohydrate, fat, vitamins and minerals which provides a nutritionally balanced meal in a drink/ sip feed when reconstituted with water or whole milk. EnergieShake® is suitable for people who find it difficult to consume or those at risk of not consuming their necessary daily nutritional intake. This can be due to several reasons, such as fatigue, nausea, difficulty chewing swallowing - pain and loss of appetite.
Our products have proved to show better patient compliance. This was proven in our previous two studies where the majority of patients scored seven or more out of nine in the taste questionnaire conducted after completing the study. In this study, patients were asked to rate characteristics such as taste, aroma, consistency, appearance. Because taste counts, our products have patient compliance, less wastage and save costs.
