TELEHEALTH: THE WAY FORWARD?

here’s no doubt that experience has proven that care homes and community hospitals
benefit greatly from the use of video consultation (VC) services to provide specialist assessment and treatment for residents and patients.
VC has been shown to help improve the management of behavioural and psychiatric symptoms of dementia. It can also improve recognition and treatment of functional disorders and to help with end-of-life and palliative
56 - SCOTTISH PHARMACIST care for elderly patients.
The Scottish Centre for Telehealth and Telecare’s facilitated VC service has been in use since 2011 and, since then, has shown benefits such as:
• Improved access to remote decision support for patients with mental health issues
• improved access to specialist care
• Reduction of antipsychotic medication
• Some patients can be managed with behavioural care plans and staff are more confident when dealing with patients with mental health issues
• reduction of the costs associated with hospital admissions and transportation reduced staff and carer travel
Over the last year, and working in partnership with others, SCTT has:
• Supported 8,314 people to access
online health and wellbeing services, providing advice and assistance for falls prevention and the self management of long term health and care issues;
• Improved access to psychological therapies for 2,889 patients who have commenced treatment through a computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy service;
• Continued to improve access to care for people living in our remote or rural communities;
• Supported the more efficient use and improved patient adherence to medication, with the introduction of virtual polypharmacy review clinics;
• Supported shared learning and knowledge transfer for more than 4,095 ‘learning beneficiaries’ as a critical element of the expansion of technology enabled health and care
