The acquisition finance has supported the purchase of John A Smith and Craigmillar Pharmacy in Edinburgh in line with the company’s growth strategy in East and Central Scotland. The two pharmacies employ 22 members of staff between them which brings Lindsay & Gilmour’s total number of employees to more than 260 across its 28 pharmacies.

‘As ambitious business owners we are always looking for the next investment opportunity to support our growth plans,’ said Nigel Cumming, Chairman of Raimes Clark & Company Limited. ‘HSBC has been instrumental in helping us achieve this latest round of acquisitions and it continues to support our evolving business needs. We look forward to furthering the

relationship we’ve had with the team since 2014.’

The finance from HSBC was allocated from the bank’s national £10 billion SME Fund to actively support UK SMEs. £450 million is specifically designated to support Scottish firms and rebalance the economy outside of London.

‘Raimes Clark is a firmly established player in the Scottish pharmacy sector,’ added Kenny White, Relationship Director at HSBC, ‘and we’re pleased to support its ongoing growth and acquisition strategy. The business has delivered a quality service across Scotland for generations and these latest acquisitions will help it reach even more customers.’

Lindsay & Gilmour started trading in 1816 as Raimes, Clarke & Co and was established on Edinburgh’s High Street. This year, the company celebrates its 200th anniversary and recently held a family fun day for their 250 staff at Meadowbank Stadium.

The Scotland NPA Conference ‘With You Every Step of the Way’ is on Sunday morning 6 November at the House for an Art Lover in Bellahouston Glasgow.

Free to NPA members and staff, the NPA will provide plenaries and workshops to help you plan the next steps for independent community pharmacies. Where Scottish Pharmacy Policy is heading will be covered by the leading Scottish influencers and practice and business workshops will provide practical support for owners, managers, pharmacists and pharmacy staff.

Community Pharmacy Scotland will explain what is required of the new Quality and Collaborative working elements of the Pharmacy contract and Leyla Hannbeck, NPA Chief Pharmacist, will be looking at how you can ensure your pharmacy is an improving patient safety environment. Workshops will include an expert endorsing and claims session, business efficiency modelling, and a guide to seeking pharmacy finance.

We will have some fun stuff including an interactive 3D pharmacy exhibit, goggles supplied, and the opportunity for networking whilst enjoying a beautiful venue. The event will end with lunch at around 1pm.

If NPA members or NPA member pharmacy staff would like to attend then please contact me to note interest at j.oman@npa.co.uk.

We recently held an NPA member forum for owners, superintendents and managers in Edinburgh where Prof Harry McQuillan CEO of Community Pharmacy Scotland led a detailed discussion on the pharmacy contract negotiation process. Alliance-Scotland, Prescription for Excellence Liaison Officer Graeme Morrison gave us the patient perspective of excellent pharmacy services. These round-table events enable detailed discussion on priority matters and a chance to meet other members. They will be held every three months on the first Tuesday morning of that month with an agenda led by the members. Venues may vary. If you would be interested in joining this group, please contact me.

You may be aware of several new member resources from the NPA. We have launched a CPD Hub offering free access to all NPA member staff which provides up-to-date training in a variety of formats including electronic modules and articles covering all aspects of community pharmacy whether clinical, business or customer service. The Hub provides members with a dashboard to monitor staff training activity and identify areas for further development, available at www.npa.co.uk/training/cpd- hub-simpler-way-log-learning-activity.

Recent Scottish resources have included guidance and SOPs for safeguarding and PVG, a signposting directory to help staff quickly direct patients to the most suitable support for self care, and a Scottish drug tariff handy guide. An easy way to find out about new support from the NPA is to subscribe to the weekly Scottish member news email at www.npa.co.uk/news-and-events/ subscribe/
