FIRST-OF-ITS KIND PANCREATIC CLINICAL TRIAL LAUNCHED IN GLASGOW

Cancer Research UK (CRUK) has launched a first-of-its-kind pancreatic cancer clinical trial to make cancer cells more responsive to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, with University of Glasgow researcher Professor Jeff Evans as the chief investigator.

The trial will treat pancreatic cancer patients whose cancer has grown too big to be removed by surgery but has not yet spread to other parts of the body.

The team will give patients on the trial a drug called olaparib, in addition to the standard treatment of chemotherapy and radiation known as chemoradiation.

In the first part of the trial, the doctors want to find the safest dose of olaparib to give with

chemoradiation. And in the second part of the trial, the doctors hope the combination will make the tumour small enough to be removed by surgery in these patients.

‘’This is the first time we’re looking at ways to make pancreatic cancer cells more sensitive to radiotherapy,’ said Professor Evans, director of the Institute of Cancer Sciences. ‘One way to make pancreatic cancer a more treatable disease is to shrink the tumour enough to make surgery a possibility and we hope to see that happen in this trial.’

Many people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at a stage when the tumour is too big to be removed by surgery and this treatment could bring tumours back to an easier-to-treat state.

TWO COMPANIES ON £20M

SCOTTISH EPMA FRAMEWORK Only two companies have been given ‘preferred bidder’ status for an e-prescribing framework contract in Scotland.

market in Scotland.

Emis Group and JAC Computer Services have now been placed on the framework, which is seen as a key part of the country’s efforts to digitise its health services, and health boards can now choose between them.

Emis Health and JAC will be the two suppliers on the £15m NHS Scotland Hospital Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (HEPMA) framework, which is rolling out electronic medicines management across hospitals.

The technology uses intuitive touch screens with a drug chart layout that is familiar to clinicians, and allows them to prescribe according to their current practice rather than having to adapt to the constraints of an electronic system.

EMIS Health’s hospital pharmacy system is already used in seven health boards, and the company has a 51.5 per cent share of the GP

‘We are delighted to have landed this important business win, which shows our reach across the UK,’ said Duane Lawrence, Managing Director for EMIS Health secondary care. ‘North and south of the border, our systems are driving up standards of patient care, transforming ways of working for clinicians and introducing efficiencies that will save the NHS money.’

JAC’s chief executive, Robert Tysall- Blay, was equally delighted to have won a place on the framework.

‘The funding and focus on hospital e-prescribing as part of the Scottish e-Health Strategy 2014- 2017 will certainly help delivery of one of the central aims of the strategy, which is ‘to improve the safety of people taking medicines and their effective use’,’ he said. ‘We look forward to building on the work undertaken by the four health boards in Scotland that are currently using HEPMA from JAC, as well as helping other health boards in delivering on their HEPMA and medicines management strategies.’
