Hi All, This month I'm featuring a different concept on the local music scene. Jam sessions at various venues have been around for some years now. But there are jam sessions and there is "The Big Jam"!
It was in February 2015 that Bud Street, Dave "the hat" Wilkinson and Mike Reilly got together with Reflections Bar, San Luis, and decided to take this idea to a new level. Known affectionately as "The Jam Tarts", this affable trio sent out an invitation to all musicians and singers to come along on a Sunday afternoon and showcase their talents. The response was overwhelming, not only was there an impressive turnout of local artistes, but the bar had a problem finding seating for the public turnout that ensued. From that cold February afternoon the audiences kept growing, week upon week. Such was the success of this venture, The Big Jam outgrew the venue and as from the 4th September, it is now held at Villa Salada Restaurant, San Luis every Sunday from 3pm - 6pm. Bud (on bass guitar / vocals), Dave (guitar / vocals) a new drummer, and Brad on keyboard make the resident house band and start off the proceedings with a short set - and then the Jam begins. The entertainers who appear each week are far too numerous to list, but amongst the regulars there are Pete Rafferty and Mike Glassup (harmonica) singers Brenda Albon, Maxine Goodie and Nick. Bob
Morris, Dave Diggle and other guest drummers. Guitar / vocalists include Johnny Telecaster, Gary Hutchison, Roger and many more. Johann drops by with his tenor saxophone, and the list goes on. As I said, too many to name individually. From the audience's perspective, it is 3 hours of non stop live music, performed by a plethora of talent. Most genres of music are covered from Country, Blues, Rock 'N Roll, Ballads etc. The success of this event knows no bounds - it just keeps getting busier. The new venue caters for outside and inside (when the cooler days come) and there are stages both inside and out. No matter what your personal taste in music is - the "across the board" performers will have something for you. If you haven't experienced The Big Jam yet - I guarantee you're in for a pleasant surprise. No better way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
