Book Review by Ivor Kindle Book title:
Spartacus: The Gladiator Author: Ben Kane. Publisher: Arrow Books.
The story of Spartacus is possibly one of the most widely known
of all historical dramas. People will have seen the classic film staring Kirk Douglas
...also the recent TV series will have refreshed the historical memory. This book however brings the man and his past to life.
An action packed read as the reader is taken back to 74 BC and the Roman dominated land of Thrace... Spartacus the Thracian and a former soldier of Rome is sold into slavery and the story begins.
The book is a revisiting of the actual tale... it does highlight however the way that Roman society saw itself as an Elite society and an Elite republic with all other non Romans being seen as a resource to further Roman power. In Spartacus, Rome pushed too far...
A classic adventure and be on the look out for part two of this enthralling tale.
