INVESTMENT IN HPV VACCINATION PROGRAMME ANNOUNCED

Men who have sex with men (MSM) in the north of Ireland will soon be eligible to receive the HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccine.

The Health Minister, Michelle O’Neill, made the announcement ahead of her visit to the recent Belfast Pride Festival.

‘I am announcing an investment of over £100,000 into the HPV vaccination programme following the advice of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI),’ Ms O’Neill said. ‘This will be a targeted vaccination programme for MSM aged up to 45 who attend GUM and HIV clinics, further details regarding the vaccination programme will be issued in due course.

‘Investment in this programme will help to provide protection against HPV which can cause a range of cancers. My Department is now working closely with the Public Health Agency to ensure the HPV vaccine can be offered to eligible men attending GUM clinics in the near future.’

Human papilloma virus is the name for a group of viruses which can lead to some forms of cancer as well as genital warts. Vaccination provides the best protection against some forms of HPV which can cause cancer.

UU ACKNOWLEDGES INVALUABLE PARTNERSHIP

Ulster University’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has presented plaques to placement providers to acknowledge the invaluable partnership with local pharmacies and industry partners. The opportunities offered inspire and contribute to the learning and development of Ulster students.

The work placements available are regularly praised by students as one of the best elements of the courses at Ulster University and also receive high commendation in the National Student Survey.

‘We would like to thank all pharmacists who are working in partnership with the School to enhance the skills of our undergraduates through pharmacy placement opportunities,’ said

Professor Paul McCarron, Head of School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. ‘These placements help bridge the gap between lecture theatre and providing care directly to patients. The pharmacies we work with are actively helping to shape the next generation of pharmacists who will ultimately drive the profession in the future.’

‘Hospital Pharmacy placements allow students to put their learning into practice in a safe environment and link their learning to direct patient care,’ added Anne Friel, Head of Pharmacy and Medicines Management in the Western Health and Social Care Trust. ‘The Health & Social Care Trusts, through the Teacher Practitioner network, provide placements in every year of the

‘It is our intention to ensure that we retain the history and heritage that both businesses have in Northern Ireland. We will create a best in class healthcare business providing the best combination of products and services to the Northern Ireland market from the propositions of both Sangers NI and AAH Pharmaceuticals to deliver outstanding service to customers.

‘Whilst we continue with our integration planning it will be business as usual and we will continue to deliver the standards of service that our customers expect and deserve.’

university course where students are exposed to a variety of areas of hospital practice early in their studies including aseptic dispensing, ward- based clinical work, quality assurance and dispensing. I believe this results in pharmacists who are better prepared for practice.’

‘The pharmacy placement is very well organised,’ said Stephen Slaine, ICP Clinical Lead Pharmacist and ICP Chair Antrim Ballymena. ‘Over the years we have been impressed by the high calibre of students and through the scheme have employed many students for Saturday and holiday employment. This plaque is a nice recognition of our partnership with Ulster University.’

The pharmacy placement team continues to recruit more community placement providers and once again the School are indebted to our community placement providers, the Hospital Teacher-Practitioner network and our industry supporters.
