Access NI Do I need to get my staff background

checked? Where a member of staff has ‘access to patients’ then the answer may be yes. Whilst employers are entitled to ask all employees for a ‘Basic’ disclosure check (which they can do themselves), pharmacies are entitled to ask staff who interface with patients as part of the dispensing process to get a Standard or Enhanced disclosure check. For example, where a member of staff is regularly involved in the dispensing of a patient’s medication or delivering that medication to a patient’s home, they are eligible for a Standard check. Pharmacists who are delivering direct services to a patient, may have an Enhanced check.

Some services commissioned through community pharmacy, such as vaccination services, come with a requirement for Access NI checks as part of the service level agreement. As an employer, you may wish to include background checks as part of your recruitment process.

Currently, HSCB do not require contractors to carry out Access NI checks, but have advised UCA, that it is the contractor who needs to make the decision whether or not Access NI checks are necessary.

For more information and advice on Access NI checks and your responsibilities as an employer, go online to www.nidirect.gov.uk. Select ‘Crime, Justice and the Law’ and you will fi nd a link to Access NI. UCA is now a registered Access NI Umbrella Body for the pharmacy sector and UCA members can apply for Standard or Enhanced Access NI employee checks through UCA. If you would like to fi nd out more about Access NI checks for community pharmacy, contact the UCA.
