WELCOME

WELL, THERE ARE CERTAINLY EXCITING TIMES AHEAD FOR COMMUNITY PHARMACY,

AREN’T THERE? From the appointment of practice based pharmacists through GP federations to the increased number of independent prescribers, the move to a more clinical, patient- facing profession is well underway.

With that in mind, it’s good to see that the new (relatively!) Health Minister, Michelle O’Neill is of similar mind and on page 8, she answers Northern Ireland (NI) pharmacists’ queries about the way forward.

And speaking of practice based pharmacists, in this issue PiF speaks to two pharmacists, who have been working in GP surgeries, and looks at what a typical day for PBPs entails (p28).

In March of this year, the then Health Minister, Simon Hamilton, launched a consultation paper into the Regulation of Pharmacy Consultation in NI. In this issue, we look at the reasons for this consultation and ascertain the views of the major professional pharmacy bodies (p16).

sense of uncertainty, particularly with regard to incoming EU legislation. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) recently gave a presentation to NI pharmacists regarding the way forward for the Falsifi ed Medicines Directive (FMD), which is due to come into force in 2019. Read what the MHRA had to say and the response of one NI community pharmacist (p12).

When it comes to health issues, men are notoriously bad at seeking help and guidance. Thanks to Building Community Pharmacy Partnership, community pharmacists across NI are taking that help and guidance to men....read about four local initiatives that are delivering great results (p26).

Elsewhere in this issue, pharmacist Jonathon Clarke tells you how to ace any interview for a pharmacist job (p55), while on page 56 we look at the New Mexico initiative, Project ECHO, and assess how it is already infl uencing NI healthcare....

And, last but certainly not least, this issue marks the launch of the tenth Pharmacy in Focus Awards! To celebrate a decade of deserving winners, we want this year’s awards to be the best ever, so help us in this crusade by reading up on the award criteria and submitting your application as soon as possible. Join us in celebrating the great and the good in NI community pharmacy!
