MAKING A SMART INVESTMENT

by Mandeep Mudhar, Director of Marketing, Numark

REGARDLESS OF THE INDUSTRY, RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS REQUIRES STRATEGIC PLANNING AND REGULAR INVESTMENT OF TIME

AND MONEY TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE. With consumer behaviour constantly evolving, there’s a real opportunity for independent pharmacies to identify the requirements of the community in which they operate and make investments in the areas that will truly benefit the business.

Healthcare is an unpredictable industry and many factors, such as funding, are out of pharmacy owner’s control. However, independents can maintain and grow their business

by focusing investment on the areas within their control – including the retail offering, store environment and services.

It’s all about determining what works best for the pharmacy’s local community and tailoring the offering to complement it. It could be that it’s based in the centre of a quiet village with an older demographic, in which case developing a collection and delivery round would provide that all

important added value for customers.

Unlike large pharmacy chains or retailers, independents have a real advantage when it comes to retail sales as they offer a purely dedicated healthcare space with more of a personalised feel. When done well, this creates a place where patients will feel comfortable seeking advice, collecting prescriptions and making use of the services on offer, all the while increasing business revenue from retail sales.

There’s also opportunity to invest in upskilling employees to deliver more services, which, over time, can be used to win more business in different sectors and have a direct impact on business success. This doesn’t always mean increasing headcount, it could

simply be a case of looking at things differently and applying new skills within the team. Equally, having support in managing the day-to-day business, running retail offers and setting up bespoke services like MURs, will free up pharmacists’ time to focus on other areas of investment.

It makes good business sense to take this approach, offering products and services that give the local community the advice and solutions to meet their specific requirements.

By taking a step back and reviewing what the business is offering on a regular basis, independents can ensure they are a real competitor in their local healthcare and retail market.
