BASKETBALL Girls’ varsity consistently secured dominant victories throughout the regular season. Rachael Haugh ’16 scored 40 points in two games, which earned her an Honorable Mention spot on the 3A All-State Basketball Team. Coach Tony Bogans and the athletes took their season to the cusp of the state playoffs. Although they ultimately fell to Rainier, the girls finished third in the league and had the top- ranked defense. Te JV girls, coached by Stephanie Rankin, got off to a strong start with a three-game winning streak in December. Although they encountered adversity in the second half of the season, their tenacity shone through in each competitive opportunity.
Boys’ varsity went 6-10, with several of their wins occurring by just a one-point margin. Te Lauran Pratt- coached team worked to build off one another’s strengths and forged a “never quit” identity. Tis ethos was evident during the Riverdale Holiday Tournament, when the boys came from behind in two different games to capture the championship trophy. Boys’ JV often mirrored their varsity counterparts, securing wins and sustaining losses often by only one possession. In February, their overtime win against Catlin Gabel set the stage for victories later in the evening from both the boys’ and girls’ varsity squads.
In the Middle School ranks, the Steve Brennan-coached Boys’ A took the MCL Championship with a big win over #2 Riverdale while Coaches Kevin Johnson and Kyle Kuchs guided the young, dynamic Boys’ West group to a 7-5 season. Tey just missed out on the final playoff spot. Girls’ A, led by Coach Kyle Reese, went on a mid-season winning streak that saw them go from last place to the #4 seed in the playoffs. Tey finished the season 5-8.
SKIING Te OES ski team had an excellent showing this season. Boys’ varsity Captain Cullen Tornton ’16 took over the Instagram account for a week to give peers and community members insight into what it takes to be a skier, sharing photos of tough on-land training, careful equipment care, and late Friday night practice runs on the mountain. Te girls’ varsity squad took home the District title in early January, which paved the way for great performances at State where Sami Woodring ’19 won the Slalom event while Tornton took sixth in the Grand Slalom. Te boys and girls finished ninth and tenth, respectively, at State.
GOLF Congratulations to Coach Missy Smith and the boys’ and girls’ golf programs for the most successful season in OES history! After shooting a school-record 75 a few weeks earlier to finish first overall and win a district title, Will Ackerman ’18 led the boys to fourth place in the State Championships. With a first place finish by Captain Jane Schlendorf ’16, the girls claimed fourth place at Districts. Schlendorf competed as an individual in the State Championships, finishing an incredible eighth.
LACROSSE Boys’ varsity finished 14-4 and ranked #5 in the State. Eleven seniors led the team in big victories over eventual State Champion Beaverton, as well as Bainbridge Island and Lincoln. Tey battled their way to the Final Four against #4 Lakeridge, where they lost a heartbreaker, 10-8. Girls’ varsity also advanced to the Final Four, where they faced #2 Lake Oswego. Despite the leadership of Hailey Harms ’16 and Sydney Garner ’16 as well as some inspired defensive play, they succumbed 14-11. Coached by OES parent Susan Bankowski, the girls finished 15-2 and claimed their fifth Portland Interscholastic Championship. In Middle School, the 7-8 girls, led by Coach Katy Fitzgerald, had an exceptional season finishing as the state runner-up to Hood River Valley.
TRACK AND FIELD With first-year coach Tyler Green at the helm, boys’ and girls’ varsity provided opponents with fierce competition at every meet this season. Stephanie Finley ’19 had an outstanding spring, breaking the OES school record in both the 800 m and 3000 m races. At Districts both the boys’ and girls’ teams finished third overall. A team of 16 Aardvarks traveled to the State Championships; highlights included Cameron Slovic ’16 placing third in the 3000 m, Oren Palmer ’18 taking third in the 300 m hurdles, and Finley earning third place in both the 1500 m and 3000 m.
Te Middle School team sent six boys and 12 girls to compete at the MCL District Meet of Champions, where the boys finished third and the girls finished sixth overall. Ryan Westcott ’20, Ryan Brown ’20, and Jackson Ray ’20 traveled to Corvallis to compete in the Middle School Meet of Champions, where Brown broke his school record in 100 m Hurdles.
TENNIS Girls’ varsity won the OES Invitational hosted at SPARC at the end of April, then forged on to Districts where they came away with the title. Te Girls took second overall at the State tournament, heavily boosted by the one-two punch of Rachael Haugh ’16 and Kate Keeney ’18. Tis dynamic doubles team took first at Districts and then secured their place as Doubles Champions at the State Tournament. Depth and talent helped boys’ varsity capture a first place at Districts, a feat they then replicated the following week to win the State title. Nat Serrurier ’16 and Daniel Leef ’17 bested all other contenders to take the Boys’ State Doubles title. Alex Olander ’17 in singles along with doubles team Sam Berger ’17 and Pavan Takkar ’17 advanced to the semifinals to earn critical points toward the District and State titles. In recognition of their consistent success and leadership, girls’ coach Coleen Davis and boys’ coach Maureen Harwood were named District Tennis Coaches of the Year.
