DIANE HERSCHLEB Upper School English Educator
What was OES like 35 years ago? It was much smaller, and of course it was just the beginning of technology so the classes were tiny. In some ways it is now a different environment, but the focus on academics, the intellectual freedom that you had to create courses or to pursue an idea—those were much the same. Tat hasn’t changed.
What will you miss about being here? Te kids, being challenged intellectually (I like that a lot), my colleagues. Even reading papers I’ll miss somewhat, because sometimes if it’s the right assignment, it’s fun to read! I’ll miss a lot.
Who were your mentors when you first came to OES? I have a mentor/friend who continues to represent a way of being I aspire to emulate, Sandy Manson, wife of our former headmaster. Sandy approached people in her personal and professional life with warmth, humor, courage, and kindness. When we taught Middle School English together, I admired her calm, lively, exacting, and good-natured manner.
Any parting words to share? I’m grateful to have been given this opportunity to initiate ideas and to carry them through; that I’ve been entrusted to take kids on adventures and have been given extraordinary opportunities in professional development.
KRIS VAN HATCHER ’70 Athletic Director
Looking back at your OES tenure, what moments and accomplishments stand out? First, getting Middle School athletics started—that was huge because we weren’t going to be successful if we just had high school sports. Next is the fall of 2005, when we won three state championships: boys’ and girls’ soccer, and girls’ volleyball. We had just won the [boys’] state lacrosse championship the spring before, and winning these three changed our level of success. Te last thing that stands out is when the community came together and we put the turf field in. Tat fundraising auction and effort was unbelievable.
What’s one thing about OES you’d want to share with someone who is new here? We have multi-talented students who get involved in a variety of activities, which makes it a fun, stimulating environment for the community. Tat’s what makes it so special. Te parents and teachers in this community are very loving and it’s a great environment to be in.
What’s next for you? I’m going to continue coaching Middle School lacrosse at OES. Otherwise I am planning on golfing, fishing, traveling, and spending time with my wife.
