Leaving a Legacy

Looking back at your OES tenure, what moments and/or accomplishments stand out in your mind? I have loved all the children in AASK (Aardvarks Advocate Skills and Knowledge). Tey’ve been my inspiration and greatest teachers. I also remember the first time the AASK summer day camp was going to open. We enrolled 27 students from Vose Elementary School that first year, and the camp was staffed completely by high school students. We flew by the seat of our pants—and it all worked! Te magic had started; the rest is history.
What’s the next step for you?
I am focusing on what I had been doing with my work at OES all along, which is drawing and painting. Making art is something necessary both to me and for the world. I have always alternated working in education with working with art. Tis time art is what’s on deck! I am giving more time to my gallery, Gallery 114, submitting work for exhibition, and have also had a solo show at Gallery 114 since I left school.
What’s one thing you’d love someone brand new to OES to know about the school? Someone once asked me what makes OES unique as a workplace. I responded that at OES everyone helps each other be their best person. Whether there is smooth sailing or challenges of any kind, I have always found deep encouragement and support that has helped me grow in becoming the best person I can be.
What’s one thing about OES you’d want to share with someone who is new here? I came to OES as a new teacher. What inspired me most was the dedication of the faculty. It was a true community. Everyone pitched in to do everything. Tere was great autonomy and high expectations. It made me want to do more, to be like those I saw around me. I hope that is still the case for new people when they arrive and that unique legacy will continue. Be inspired by your peers!
Who were your initial mentors when you came to OES? Several names come to mind when I think of those who have influenced me. I will be eternally grateful to Peter Sipple for hiring me. I give Ed Rubovits credit for putting this school on the path to greatness. I worked with Nancy Doulis for many years in the math department and always appreciated her quiet wisdom. Anne Cass was only here a few years, but inspired us all to be our best selves. Pamela Vohnson and David Streight, while only a few years older than I, were role models that were most valuable.
GARY CROSSMAN Upper School Math Educator
Looking back at your OES tenure, what moments and accomplishments stand out? When I look back on what I have done here at OES, what surprises and impresses me most is the variety of things I have done. Not including all the committees, just the job titles, I’ve been: a math teacher (always and foremost), basketball coach (boys and girls in Upper and Middle Schools), Head of the Middle School, Head of the Upper School, Athletic Director, Alumni Associate, Academic Dean, Calendar Czar, Used Book Coordinator, Financial Aid Coordinator, and probably a few I am forgetting.
