OES WINS OREGON BATTLE OF THE BOOKS TOURNAMENT FOR 4TH YEAR RUNNING


OES SENIOR GOES TO NATIONAL SCIENCE COMPETITION


Tis April, the OES Upper School Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) Team won the State Championship for the fourth year in a row. Supported by their alternates Emily Howell ’17 and Harry Zhu ’17, the main team comprised of Ellie Chang ’19, Mark Fernandez ’16, Rhea Mehta ’19, and Sarah Wong ’16 prevailed over three strong rival squads on their path to victory. Part of OBOB’s mission is to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students, which the OES team deftly applied to secure the big win. “It’s easy to see that our team really consists of scholars,” coach VJ Sathyaraj proudly stated at the trophy presentation.


DORI KING NAMED NEW DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS


To strengthen existing connections and forge new bonds, OES created a new Director of Community Partnerships position this spring. Primary Class teacher Dori King, now in her fifth year at OES, was selected to serve as the inaugural Director. Supported in part by the E.E. Ford Foundation


and other contributors, King’s charge is to continue to build OES’s diversity, access, intercultural competency, and ongoing community partnerships. She will also oversee the AASK (Aardvarks Advocate Skills and Knowledge) program in conjunction with Spanish educator Maria McIvor. “I think the things that Community Partnerships can bring are vehicles for discussion,” says King. “Ways to get our community talking about what equity, social justice, and inclusion look like.”

In February, Vikul Gupta ’16 was selected as a finalist for the 2016 Intel Science Talent Search. Of the 40 students chosen to compete at the national level, Vikul was the only candidate from Oregon. As Betsy Hammond wrote in her Oregonian story on Vikul, “[t]hat contest is considered the country’s most prestigious math and science competition. Gupta’s work on encryption elevated him to those heights.” Vikul’s project, entitled Parallel Implementation of the Convolution Operation in Quotient Polynomial Rings for the NTRU Cryptosystem, involved writing a new algorithm that enables computer hardware designers to increase the efficiency of encryption chips.


FIFTH GRADER RECEIVES PRESIDENTIAL SERVICE AWARD For several years now, Piper Buckley ’23 has held an annual garage sale to raise money for various organizations—such as the Children’s Cancer Association and OHSU. Tis year, as she and her fifth grade classmates learned more about worldwide girls’ education, they decided to collect funds for UNICEF. With her 2015 garage sale, Piper single-handedly raised $1,350 and as a result, received the Silver President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) in March. Te PVSA encourages citizens to live a life of service and take positive action that changes the world. Te funds Piper raised will aid UNICEF in its mission of supporting the world’s children.
