Commencement 2016
ISABELLA WALDRON ’16 “What does one do when the rain turns
on them? Well, in third grade, I figured out it was not the silent treatment because all that got me was a timeout. But now, graduating from OES, I know what to do. I learned it from rainy days, from Dr. Seuss, and from the mentors that we’ve been lucky enough to have here. In order to pull ourselves out of the
dreaded slump, we must find the friends who will make us laugh in a downpour, stand our ground when the puddles reach our calves, and focus on the fact that rain doesn’t last forever—however skeptical we Portlanders are about this. Te Portland gray will clear and in its path, there will be bright green trees to greet you. To my classmates, I encourage you to focus on what is beautiful and what we’ve done so well during our time at OES. Te Class of 2016 is full of people who care. We’ve learned how to work together, how to have meaningful conversations, and how to take action when our community calls for it. Our class has learned and is still learning how to navigate change with curiosity and imagination, no matter the rain levels. Go forward on your journeys, knowing that your classmates will always be ready to offer up an umbrella.
. . . Whatever the challenge, whatever the day Your life is a story of journeys and change And this class of people, so wild, so brave Will always be there, just a message away,
So reach out your hand if you’re stuck in the slump, And give us a call when you’re hitting the bumps
We’ve climbed higher mountains, there’s still more to find
We’re all running fast, but we won’t leave one behind
Each day is our day Our stories are waiting Let’s get on our way.”
