Class Notes
and rewarding experiences of my life. As a class of 18, we’ve all graduated and are now off to our next assignments. I was fortunate enough to be selected to continue training at a course known as IFF (Initial Fighter Fundamentals) down in San Antonio. I’ll be flying with 10 others, competing to be part of the first student class in the F-35. So far the Air Force has been an amazing organization to be a part of and has led me to work with some of the highest caliber people in the country.

this summer for a year, then onward to UC San Diego where I will be training to be a neurologist. If any classmates are still in Portland, let’s catch up!
2008 EMILY PETROFF I submitted and defended my PhD thesis at the end of last year at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. So now I am officially a PhD astrophysicist! The last year of my PhD was particularly fun with trips to the UK, Germany, Italy, the US, and even Uluru and a couple of particularly exciting discoveries related to my research topic of fast radio bursts (and some accidental work on microwave ovens!). After a few months off in Portland (present-day OESians may have seen me volunteering at the OES Upper School Library) I started a postdoctoral position at ASTRON in the Netherlands. My position is centered around an upgrade of the Westerbork telescope here in Holland, and I will be using it over the next few years to find fast radio bursts and do other exciting science!

2009 TORBEN NOTO I’ve been working for the last two years at a computational neuroscience lab at UC San Diego and this fall I’ll begin pursuing a PhD in neuroscience at Northwestern University. I’m beyond grateful for all of the amazing teachers I had at OES to help me get this far. If any alumni are in Chicago and/or want to talk about brains, let me know!

2010 JEFF TEUFEL
I’ve spent the past couple of years in Enid, Oklahoma, at Vance Air Force Base training in the T-6 and T-38. Although Oklahoma may not be the most exciting place, I’ve really enjoyed my time here. I’ve flown with some amazing people and made some lifelong friends throughout the program. Getting to fly the “white rocket” was an absolute privilege and has been one of the most challenging
2011 RAMAN GARG AND MIKHIEL TAREEN Raman and Mikhiel celebrated their birthdays together in Sonoma with a group of friends that included OES classmates.
2011 DUNCAN LEVEAR I graduated in 2011. I’ve just finished my first year of a PhD in mathematics at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. Next year I will be teaching calculus to undergraduates at Brandeis. This summer I’m working at a math summer camp for advanced high schoolers at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.
