Estelle Kelley ’78 Receives Cecil B. Drinkward Award for Trustee Excellence

Te Cecil B. Drinkward Award for Trustee

Excellence is awarded as warranted by the OES Board of Trustees to trustees “whose service to OES exemplifies the meritorious traditions of stewardship, vision, and dedication to the mission of the School.” At its June meeting, the Board presented the award to Estelle Kelley ’78. Kelley has served on the Board of Trustees since

2008. In that time she has served on nearly every committee—Advancement, Board Operations, Development (Chair), and Finance. She also chaired the most recent Head of School Search/Transition Committee and led Open Up: Te Campaign for OES, in support of the new Lower School. “Estelle has been an outstanding Board member in

every way,” said Board President Kate Lieber. “As head of the search committee that ultimately resulted in Mo Copeland’s hiring, Estelle was thorough, engaged, and led an outstanding process. As chair of Open Up: Te Campaign for OES, her leadership was unwavering. She

constantly inspires others to be better. If there was ever a trustee who exemplifies excellence, it is Estelle Kelley.” Kelley attended OES as a middle school boarding student, then graduated with honors from the Punahou School in her birthplace of Hawai’i. “When I think of OES, I feel love,” remarks

Kelley. “Love for the school that nurtured me during those critical middle school years during which it gave me a safe space to learn from both my successes and failures; a community that valued me as a unique person and showed its care and commitment to helping me as I began to understand my relationship with the world. I also think of love for the community that trusted me to faithfully steward the school through the past eight years, a transitional time during which the school strengthened its sense of identity and recommitted itself to its mission and vision. A

community that understands the goal of educational excellence involves working together and taking risks, and remembering the role love plays as we develop our hearts, minds, bodies, and spirits. I am greatly touched that my OES colleagues considered my

service to the school worthy of this honor. I know my success as an OES trustee has been because of their support, trust, and respect. Tank you.”
