1937 JEAN GROVES BULLWINKLE Jean Groves


Bullwinkle ’37 died on March 3, 2016. Jean and her family moved from Missouri to Portland in 1930 and she started as a freshman at St.


Helen’s Hall in 1933. Jean was editor of the school yearbook, The Delphic, during her senior year. She attended Randolph Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia, and ultimately received her BA in English literature from the University of Oregon. She married Benjamin Bullwinkle in August of 1942 and accompanied Ben throughout the US as he served in the military during World War II. Their daughter, Martha Ann, was born in 1954 in Portland. The family continued to live in Portland, where Jean was a member of the Junior League and enjoyed doing volunteer work. Jean helped organize the “Big Move” to the new Nicol Road campus in 1964, and she started the first Lower School Library in the late 1960s. Jean is survived by her daughter, Martha (Bullwinkle) Dorrell ’73.


1942 MARGARET BLACK MONTAG Margaret Black Montag ’42 died on January 1, 2016. Although Margaret was born in St. Louis, she had moved to Portland by the


time she was two and always considered herself an Oregonian. She graduated from Grant High School, St. Helen’s Hall, and the University of Oregon. She married Joe Montag and they raised three daughters: Leslie, Meredith McCall (Jerry), and Alison (Alex Jones) before divorcing. Margaret returned to school at Lewis & Clark College to earn a master of fine arts and become a high school teacher. An all-around artist and inventor, Margaret was a natural to teach the


first computer class at Wilson High School, along with art and photography. In retirement she taught watercolor classes to adults and did workshops with many other accomplished painters. She traveled the world with her camera. Always curious, she snapped literally thousands of photos that she used to create wonderful paintings when she came home.


1960 DONNA BOOKHULTZ KILGORE Donna Kilgore ’60 passed away suddenly on April 20, 2016, at her home in St. George, Utah. She was born on June


1954 JACQUELINE (JACKIE) HOWARD KRAFT Jacqueline (Jackie) Howard Kraft ’54 died on March 5, 2016. She was the daughter of Fred Howard Jr. and Esther (Ledtke) Howard. Jackie graduated from St. Helen’s Hall in 1954 and from Lewis & Clark College in 1958, having majored in elementary education. Later she took graduate classes to qualify her to work with developmentally challenged children. Jackie loved theater. While in college, she volunteered as an usher at Portland Civic Theater in return for which she was allowed to watch the shows for free. Her big moment came when she joined the movement chorus of the Portland Opera as a supernumerary. Beginning in 1968, she visited nearly every country in Western Europe, but her special passion was for Great Britain, and particularly Scotland. She combined her two passions by going to shows whenever she was in London or New York. Regrettably, a diagnosis of spinal cancer in May 2012 put an end to her travel and theater going. She is survived by her husband, Charles; son, Kevin (Mary) of Menlo Park, California; and two grandchildren. A daughter, Shannon Kraft, preceded her in death.


12, 1942 in Portland to Donald and Florence Bookhultz. Donna lived in Portland during her childhood, graduating from the University of Oregon, where she was a member of the ski team. She spent her career as a social worker helping children and the elderly obtain a better life. Donna was a voracious reader, gourmet cook, and did beautiful needlepoint pieces. She enjoyed playing golf and fly fishing with her husband. Donna is survived by her husband, Morris; his sons, Mitchell and Matthew; her sister, Barbara; two grandchildren; and a niece and nephew. Cody Heckrodt-Hallenbeck ’10 died on February 21, 2016. Adventurer, explorer, world traveler, passionate chef, beloved son, brother, and friend, Cody was lost in a tragic climbing accident while he was traveling in Thailand. He is survived by his parents, Carla Heckrodt and Julie Hallenbeck, his brother Bryce, his grandparents, Frank and Florence Heckrodt and Jack and Donna Hallenbeck, many extended family members, and many, many friends worldwide. Cody lived and loved life to the fullest with his heart wide open.
