Green power for UK corrugated board manufacturer

C

onsortium-owned corrugated board manufacturer CorrBoard UK is planning build a

500kw anaerobic digester (AD) power plant. Construction of the £3.5 million

project at CorrBoard’s factory in North Lincolnshire is expected to start later in 2016. A spokesman said that the AD plant was in line with the company’s strategy to provide the UK’s most environmentally sound and efficient production of corrugated board. When operation starts in 2017, the AD plant will supply enough electricity to supply 1,000 homes and heat for 500 homes. “Given our corrugator already

operates with up to 40 per cent less energy than older installations we believe that, with the addition of the AD plant, our carbon

footprint credentials will be a major incentive for new business opportunity,” he said. The AD plant will use 25,000

tonnes of organic waste a year, supplied by local food processors, waste management and agricultural industries in North Lincolnshire. Ordinarily, this material would end up in landfill or be processed into other products. “The by-product of the AD plant

is digestate, a highly nutritious organic fertiliser that can then be sold to agricultural industries,” the spokesman added. A large proportion of the gas

produced by the AD plant will be used to fire the corrugator’s boiler with residual heat used to provide warmth in the winter months as well as pre-heating water fed to the boiler, further reducing the gas consumption of the corrugating process.

Kotkamills boxboard range launch

Finnish board maker Kotkamills has launched range of consumer board products – the folding boxboard range under the AEGLE brand and the food service range by the ISLA brand – using a new board machine, which enables barrier coatings to be applied directly on the cartonboard machine as part of normal production. “With our next-generation barrier boards, it is possible to use the normal paper recycling process, as they are fully recyclable and repulpable.
