The report includes data on producti on, consumpti on and the trade of pulp, paper and raw materials, as well as on energy and environment. The main highlights of the report
are:
● CEPI members produced 90.9 million tonnes of paper and board. This is a slight decrease of 0.2 per cent in 2014 and represents
he European paper industry’s performance in 2015 was second in the world only to
relati ve stability over the last three years. The operati ng rate for 2015 increased to 91.2 per cent from 89.7 per cent in 2014. ● Sales were €78.8 billion, up 0.4 per cent but down on the €79.4bn in 2000. ● Graphic grades (newsprint, writi ng and printi ng paper) represented 38.8 per cent of all paper and board produced in Europe in 2015, packaging grades 49.0 per cent, sanitary and household papers 7.9 per cent and speciality grades 4.3 per cent. ● The overall output performance of CEPI countries in total was slightly bett er than in most other major traditi onal paper producing regions of the world, with a fall in producti on recorded in all regions except China. Paper and board producti on decreased in Brazil (-0.5 per cent), South Korea (-0.9 per cent), the USA (-1.0 per cent), Japan (-1.0 per cent) and Canada (-7.4 per cent). Producti on in China rose by 2.3 per cent compared to 2014. ● The number of pulp and paper
manufacturers has started to increase again, up from 628 in 2014 to 633 in 2015, but this is sti ll 32 per cent fewer than in 1991.
● The number of mills conti nues to decline as producti vity rises. In 2015 the fi gure was 917, down 0.2 per cent. The paper machine count was 1,288, down 0.1 per cent. ● The number of
employees conti nues to decline at 178,212, down 1.6 per cent year-on-year, and 36.3 per cent less than in 1991.
● Consumpti on rose for the second year in a row by 0.5 per cent compared to 2014, totalling 77.4 million tonnes. The economic recovery observed in the EU28 and the euro area in 2015 – an annual GDP increase of 2.0 per cent and 1.7 per cent respecti vely (source: Eurostat) – had a positi ve impact on paper and board demand. ● CEPI countries maintained an overall positi ve paper and board
trade balance
(exports exceeding imports) of 13.5 million tonnes in 2015, compared to 14.0 million tonnes in 2014. ● Market pulp producti on fell by 0.7 per cent compared to 2014, with an output of 13.1 million tonnes.

Paper making mill at Suzhou squeezed out of town
Stora Enso is selling its mill site at Suzhou in China to the local development body. The mill has been in operati on
for 20 years, during which the city of Suzhou has grown around the mill, making it diffi cult to develop and conti nue industrial operati ons at the current site, Stora Enso said in a statement. It has agreed to sell the key assets of the mill including the

land-use rights and buildings, to the Suzhou Nati onal New & Hi-tech Industrial Development Area (SND) for about €240 million. Producti on was due to stop in June and the deal is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2016. “Suzhou Mill is a recognised high quality paper producer with an established customer base,”
said Kati ter Horst, executi ve vice president of Stora Enso’s Paper division. “However, the mill only has one paper machine and it will no longer be competi ti ve aft er the emergence of larger-sized mills in the Chinese market. The locati on of the mill in the middle of a large city is not favourable for paper producti on.” The mill was running at cost
so the sale will not aff ect Stora Enso’s profi tability. Sales from the mill, which had 240,000 tonnes of annual wood-free coated paper producti on capacity, were €126 million. With a populati on of 11 million, Suzhou City borders west Shanghai. SND plans to convert the mill site from industrial use to non-industrial use.
