Dryer rebuild for Smurfit Kappa’s Barbosa mill


S


murfit Kappa Papelsa is having the drying section of its PM1 machine at


the Barbosa mill in Colombia rebuilt by Italy’s Toscotec. The rebuild is intended to


improve efficiency by increasing the operating speed and gross production by more than 40 per cent.


It will involve the application of 42 TT SteelDryers with the machine’s five sections. The rebuild will also include an advanced rope-less tail


threading system and sheet stabilization designed for an operating speed of 1,000 metres per minute. Start up of the rebuilt PM1 is


expected to be at the beginning of 2017. Benefits that Papelsa requires


are: higher heat transfer rate due to the thinner shell thickness of the steel dryer; wider drying face length with the same space requirements, leading to the possibility of drying a wider sheet width; and safer equipment.

Recausticizing upgrade for Arkhangelsk in Russia


A recausticizing upgrade has been ordered by Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper from Valmet. The upgrade for the Novodvinsk mill includes both technology and automation to increase capacity and replace obsolete equipment. Start-up is scheduled for later in 2017. Arkhangelsk is a leading


container board manufacturer in Russia and one of the country’s leaders in pulp production. “The project is the second


stage of bleached pulp production upgrade in order to


increase the capacity,” said Pavel Smirnov, deputy chief engineer of the mill. “The first stage included


the replacement of old drum washers and installation of three Valmet TwinRoll presses was successfully completed in 2015. The goal is to increase white liquor production, which will be followed by installation of an oxygen delignification plant in the future. The obsolete equipment will be replaced as well during the project.” Thomas Malmqvist, sales


manager at Valmet, added: “The rebuild will make it possible to increase the capacity of the plant and reduce the considerable maintenance that is required today. The delivery is especially exciting since it is the first time that we will deliver our new generation lime mud disc filter called OptiDisc. The design will increase work safety and ensure mill runnability.” The recausticizing plant will comprise equipment for cooling, slaking, white liquor filtration and lime mud washing


and drying. Also included is automation instruments related to machinery motors and a DCS process control system. The new design of the lime mud disc filter gives access to bearings and seals from outside the vessel, which makes maintenance easier and improves safety. With the new design the lifetime of the main shaft is doubled. Arkhangelsk specialises in


production of bleached sulphate pulp, board including uniliners, a range of paper grades, and copy-books.


Pulp dryer rebuild to increase capacity at CMPC in Brazil


CMPC Riograndense is having the PDM1 pulp dryer at its mill near Guaíba in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul rebuilt by Voith. Objective is to improve the dryer’s stability and performance, as well as to make it easier to carry out


maintenance services on the machine’s drive systems. Once completed in the second half of 2016, the PDM1 will have increased capacity of 1,320 metric tons a day at a speed of 165 metres per minute. The project will be carried out under the PLP (Process Line


Package) concept, in which Voith takes full responsibility for procuring and managing the supply of all the necessary equipment and services to operate the machine. This includes new controls


for the machine’s individual drive systems, a steam box with


automatic profile control, a threading system, the lubrication and steam and condensate systems, electrical drives, basic and detail engineering and electromechanical assembly, along with all the necessary training and commissioning services.
