Control system that optimises debarking offers cost savings
cent of operati ons in Finland could off er reducti on in losses elsewhere. The WoodSmart control system
A
developed by Teknosavo is being used to help make savings in the debarking process with around 25 million cubic metres of ti mber passing through the system in Finland each year. Teknosavo says that there is
wood loss of up to four per cent in many pulp mills, which for a single line is the equivalent to €1
control system for opti mising the wood debarking process that is used in 80 per
million a year. Instead of conti nuous manual
control, WoodSmart is an opti mising system, equipped with patented online measurement devices such as lasers and vision systems, that maximise the process from gate to digester. The WoodSmart system measures the whole process, starti ng from the fi lling of the drum where it stabilises the wood fl ow and calculates the best control values for debarking. Regardless of the wood species, it is debarked precisely to the opti mum level of required cleaning. The opti misati on
equipment measures bark content on logs, as well as wood content in the bark material on bark conveyor. Correct cleaning not only decreases raw material loss but also guarantees and improves the high quality of the end product. Measurement of multi ple process variables in real-ti me is said to enable the opti misati on of the enti re debarking process. For example in de-icing control,
WoodSmart calculates the energy required to de-ice the wood. Furthermore, the system alarms in the event that stones are detected at the chipper
infeed conveyor. A high uti lisati on rate minimises
maintenance costs and idle ti me created by malfuncti ons. The WoodSmart technology can be installed to new and existi ng wood processing lines as well as all debarking systems with specifi c automati on levels. Teknosavo claims that the
WoodSmart system will pay for itself in less than a year. More informati on from
