he studied industrial engineering, Senkbeil later achieved his MBA at an American campus in Bangkok. “I’m no stranger to travelling,” Senkbeil concludes. “I will split my ti me between Asia, Australia, my home city of Berlin and of course UNTHA’s Salzburg headquarters. And hopefully UNTHA’s knowledge of the global market will conti nue to grow as a result.”


Abilio Franco to expand Contech’s business scope


Contech, the Brazil-based supplier of specialist chemicals to the pulp and paper industry, has appointed Abilio Franco as general director based in Sau Paulo. He will be responsible for the formation of new policies


and operational and strategic communication strategies at Contech. Franco says his greatest challenge will be increase the scope of the company in Latin America, along with Europe, Asia, USA and Canada.


Jääskeläinen appointed EVP at UPM Raflatac


Antti Jääskeläinen has been appointed executi ve vice president responsible for UPM Rafl atac, part of the UPM Group and has joined its group executi ve team. Based in Helsinki he reports to chief executi ve Jussi Pesonen. Jääskeläinen, 43, was previously


responsible for UPM Rafl atac’s business in Europe, Middle-East, India and Africa (EMEIA) as senior vice president where he had been since 2014. “UPM Rafl atac has signifi cant opportuniti es for value creati on in the growing self-adhesive

The Arne Asplund Mechanical Pulping Award for 2016 will be presented in September to Tomas Björkqvist, Mikael Lucander and Olli Tuovinen. Awarded every two years by the Arne Asplund Mechanical Pulping Award Foundati on, it promotes the development of new technology for the manufacture of high-yield pulp. The awarded team has worked

together in a systemati c way, from laboratory to full scale operati on, to show that their hypothesis about a novel surface for grinding stones is valid. The new type of grinding stone with a diamond covered surface, known as ‘Galileo technology’, is already established worldwide. A key achievement for this


innovati on is the possible energy saving in wood grinding in the


range of 150 - 500 kWh/ton, depending on pulp grade and other operati onal factors. Tomas Björkqvist received his


Doctorate in 2002 from Tampere University of Technology in Finland. Aft er a long academic career, he is currently a Senior Research Fellow at Tampere University of Technology. Mikael Lucander, with a Masters degree in Polymer Chemistry from

Helsinki University is reti red aft er a long career at KCL in Finland where he was a research fellow. Olli Tuovinen has a Masters


degree from Helsinki University of Technology in Finland. He has held several producti on positi ons within the Finnish forest industry and has spent the last 30 years in Valmet, Tampella and Metso. Currently he is R&D manager at Valmet. The award will be presented on 27 September at the Internati onal Mechanical Pulping Conference. The event is hosted by TAPPI and will be held at Jacksonville in Florida.
