• Guided tour of Rabat and the ancient capital, atmospheric Mdina

Between Africa and Europe, with 6,000 years of history - think of the Maltese Falcon, the Knights of St John and the George Cross. There is just so much to experience!

DAY 1 - ARRIVAL IN MALTA Flight to Malta. On arrival a coach will take you to your choice of hotel in St Julian’s where you will stay on a dinner bed and breakfast basis: the four-star Hotel Vivaldi is ideally located on a scenic stretch of coastline. It has a restaurant, bar and roof-top swimming pool. Alternatively you can upgrade to our four-star superior hotel located in St Julian’s.

DAY 2 - VALLETTA Today you will have a tour of the wonderful 16th century city of Valletta, founded by the Knights of St John, which has changed little since it was built. St John’s Cathedral is remarkable, with overwhelming decoration, as is the Grand Masters’ Palace which admirably reflects the status of the Knights. You will visit the Malta Experience which tells the story of this wonderful island using the latest audio-visual techniques. In the afternoon you may want to visit the archaeological museum, the Grand Masters’ Palace or the National War Museum at Fort St Elmo which houses the replica of the George Cross.

DAY 3 - GOZO You will visit the sleepy island of Gozo and its capital, Victoria, a charming medieval town with twisting streets and alleyways with almost completely intact battlements. The pace of life is very relaxed here

and what can be better than sipping a coffee and watching the world go by from a pavement cafe. The coastline is simply dramatic where sheer cliffs plunge into deep blue waters: especially at Dwerja where geology and the sea have together formed a huge natural arch in the cliffs known as the Azure Window, with a cliff bound lagoon behind. You also visit the largest and best-preserved of the island’s prehistoric temple sites - Ggantija - even older than the Pyramids and Stonehenge.

DAY 4 - FREE DAY Today you will have a free day to explore as you wish. A wander around St Julian’s perhaps, with its picturesque quayside lined by fish restaurants. A ‘must-see’ in Malta (but not part of this tour) is a visit to the hypogeum, a series of underground burial chambers and temple dating from 3,500BC. It is superbly preserved with the builders obviously aware of sophisticated building techniques, perspective and sound resonance. Visits, costing approximately €30, need to be reserved at least a month in advance and tickets can be booked at www.heritagemalta.org.

DAY 5 - MDINA After breakfast you will take the short drive to ancient Mdina, the jewel in the crown of the entire

island and former capital. Perched loftily on a hill and surrounded by huge walls, its quiet and narrow streets and alleyways ooze history. With the baroque dome of the Cathedral

puncturing the skyline, and hosts of yellow limestone patrician townhouses wonderfully adorned with wrought ironwork, Mdina is marvellously atmospheric. During your tour you will see St Paul’s Catacombs, a maze of more than 1,000 4th century Christian burial chambers, as well as a Roman villa with a beautiful mosaic floor. You will also visit the amazingly decorated Church of Mosta, which has the third largest dome in the world.

DAY 6 - FREE DAY Today is a free day to explore as you wish.

DAY 7 - NEOLITHIC TEMPLES After breakfast you will visit the amazing Neolithic temples at Tarxien, which date between 3000 and 1800BC and offer important evidence of the cultures that inhabited Malta. You will also have a short walking tour of Vittoriosa and then visit the pretty fishing village of Marsaxlokk.

DAY 8 - RETURN FLIGHT Today, at the appropriate time, you will be taken to the airport for the return flight.

• Visit St. Paul’s Catacombs, burial place of early Christians

• Tour of the Neolithic temples of Ggantija and Tarxien, claimed to be amongst the world’s oldest free-standing structures, pre-dating pyramids

• Visit to the picturesque fishing port of Marsaxlokk • Escorted by our experienced Tour Manager
