Birmingham New Street Station’s bespoke stone paving and benches

art commissions. Birmingham New Street Station required CAD to create bespoke stone paving, steps, planters and benches as part of its £750m transformation. The method was also used to

develop the area surrounding Teeside University’s dramatic new- build, The Curve, creating an iconic central focus in the heart of Middlesbrough. A raised sculptural lawn feature, with a sitting edge in a complex elliptical shape, was constructed at the heart - an ambitious architectural design that first required a 3D model to develop production and cutting details.

‘Thanks to advances in technology, the ancient craft of stone manipulation has been revolutionised’

Etching and finishing touches For contemporary finishings and decoration such as texture and shadowing, again highly pressurised air mixed with an abrasive slowly grinds down materials to produce high quality, unique etching designs with a frosted look. This fine detailing process allows for a finish that looks like two different

colours, plus through intricate layering, further colours can be developed. The process can also be used to sandblast letters as small as 2-3mm on textured natural stone materials, masonry, metals and glass. This technique was used to capture Wolverhampton’s medieval history, where text was engraved on unique, curved stone benches. A ‘Literary Carpet’ was also created at Liverpool Central Library using a shadow effect to lead visitors to a new entrance door - featuring the names of many books, films and music titles. Commenting on the development of stone sculpturing techniques,

Hardscape’s Masonry product manager, Nigel Hudson, said: “Over time, traditional stone manipulation techniques have developed to improve speed and precision. Now, complex and large-scale projects can be completed using advanced technology that allow for greater restraint over the whole process, with computer control for specific positioning and velocity, precise measuring, cutting and manufacturing of materials to exact design specifications. “Design capabilities are improving all the time – increasingly we are able

to bring designs to life and help architects decide on the best materials to create inspirational designs.”
