Queen’s award for innovative company
Prime minister David Cameron has praised a Cannock Chase company after it secured a prestigious Queen’s Award for Innovation. The firm is Cannock Wood-based ATP
Industries Group Limited. Local MP Amanda Milling raised the awards
during a prime minister’s question time, and informed Mr Cameron of the company’s growth from humble beginnings in 1969 to their success in exporting. Mr Cameron commended ATP and said: “I
certainly join my Hon Friend in congratulating ATP, it’s very difficult to win a Queen's Award so they do deserve praise. “ ATP group started in trading in 1969 in
Mark Bowen and Amanda Milling
founder Alan Smart’s garage. The company is now a market leader in testing and re- manufacturing of automatic transmissions. ATP exports its products across the globe from a purpose built 8,000 sq ft site in Cannock
Wood. The company is continuing to expand, and managed to increase exports last year by more than 50 per cent. Ms Milling said: “The technological hurdle
that ATP have overcome to carry out this type of precision testing is breathtaking. It shows the level of skill and innovation we have in Cannock Chase. My congratulations go out to everyone at ATP. They are showcasing just some of the high technology and engineering skills we have here and are a great example of local businesses here that are continuing to grow.
Mark Bowen, ATP Group sales director, said:
“We would like to thank Amanda and the prime minister for their praise. I hope this is the first of many Queen’s Awards for our cutting edge innovation. We are proud to be in Cannock Chase and it is a great place for us to base our business.”

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics have revealed that Cannock Chase is the second most improved area in Staffordshire in terms of the fall in the number of job-seeking claimants. The news has been described by local MP Amanda Milling as ‘fantastic’.
‘The total number unemployed in the Cannock Chase constituency has fallen to 739, which is a 2,165 reduction in claimants since March 2010’
The number of Jobseeker Allowance claimants in Cannock has dropped by 12 per cent since March 2015 and the total number unemployed in the Cannock Chase constituency has fallen to 739, which is a 2,165 reduction in claimants since March 2010, a drop of 75 per cent . Ms Milling said: "This is fantastic news
for the area and represents the growing recovery in the constituency. We will still work to reduce the unemployment number further and I am championing apprentices, business growth and new business here in Cannock Chase to help it drop even further. Both I and the district council also have jobs fairs coming up in the next few months.”
Nationally the employment rate remains at a
record high of 74.1 per cent, with 31.4 million people in work, up 20,000 over the past quarter and 360,000 on the year. At the same time, long term unemployment
has fallen to 467,000, the lowest since early 2009 and the inactivity rate – people not in employment and not looking or not available to work – has fallen to its joint lowest rate on record, 21.7 per cent Ms Milling said: “The UK jobs market continues
to strengthen, with nearly three-quarters of a million vacancies in the economy at any one time. This shows how the employment market is growing and there are more jobs available that at almost any time before.” The MP is holding a job fair in Rugeley on 17 June, in order to help reduce the town’s jobless statistics.
