1813 Club and Premier Members Pals provide support for CEOs By Jon Griffin

Two HR bosses and friends of 30 years have launched a ‘troubleshooting’ consultancy to help pressurised chief executives – targeting Birmingham as their heartland. David Huber and Archy Muir are management consultants who provide change management services. These changes can be large or small, ranging from major organisation reviews to succession planning and talent retention. David and Archy have more than

50 years’ human resource experience between them on their CVs – and are now putting decades of expertise into a brand new venture to help steer bosses through the minefield of corporate change. Huber Muir (www.hubermuir.com)

– described as a ‘boutique consultancy’ – has been launched by the two executives at a time when the tenure of a CEO seems similar to that of a Premier League Manager. The duo, both 66, say mutual

trust and a considered approach are the cornerstones of their fledgling business. They advise bosses to step back before rushing headlong into decision-making in today's 24-7 working environment. Powys-based David, whose

business CV includes spells at groups ranging from Dunlop and Beefeater Gin, to Burton Group and Safeway Stores, said: “In today's

chief executives are under such awful pressure from all sides – from shareholders, from the board and of course, they have to run the business as well.” David said: “We thought Birmingham would be fertile ground for us, so we joined the Chamber. We looked at other Chambers, but this was the one we felt most comfortable with, which is why we took out Premier membership. “We have worked with chairmen

business world, everything has to be done now. There is so little time to stand back, take stock and think about what you are doing. Executives need to think through strategies and ask themselves ‘Why are we facing these issues?’” Kenilworth-based Archy, whose

career included stints at the Engineering Employers Federation, the TSB group and Forte Hotels,

Wrekin Products inspires the UK

Lichfield-based Wrekin Products has been listed on a prestigious report from the London Stock Exchange Group, which celebrates the achievements of the UK’s most inspiring and fastest-growing small to medium enterprises (SMEs). This is the third year that the ‘1000 Companies to

Inspire Britain’ report has been published. The report is published in conjunction with the ‘Daily

Telegraph’ and backed by leading business figures, including the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, and is regarded as a vital snapshot of successful businesses to look out for. Wrekin says its listing underlines its reputation as an

‘influential supplier of innovative solutions in civil engineering’. “It’s an honour to be ranked amongst so many

forward-thinking and successful British businesses,” said Wrekin sales director Simon Turner. “To know that our achievements are being noticed

by major players in the London Stock Exchange reinforces what we’re already finding – namely, that we’re creating solutions of real value to our customers, be they the builders’ merchants who stock our range, to the engineers who use our products on a daily basis.”

said: “The business world is undergoing rapid change, driven by international economics and globalisation. The key challenge is to make sure that everyone understands that. “Corporates keep chasing the

lowest cost of production. There may come a point where that changes but we have not reached it yet. To succeed in this environment, companies need to continually review their strategy and reshape their organisations accordingly – this enables them to respond positively and decisively to threats and opportunities. “The people making the decisions are being driven by the financial world. But companies and

and chief executives for many, many years. I think we have the gravitas, experience and expertise to make interventions where CEOs want to change the structure of their organisations. We have no vested interests and no axe to grind, which means we are able to give candid advice.” Archy said Huber Muir would

focus on the Birmingham and Manchester conurbations – with high hopes for the Birmingham market. “Birmingham is a region of big change and massive opportunities for business growth. It feels more entrepreneurial than other areas of the UK. "We are doing this because we

want to and believe we can make a difference.”
