EDUCATION isn’t something that comes to an end when you leave school.

Increasing numbers of adults are going on to further studies – whether alongside their chosen career or after their working life comes to an end.

‘Adult education’ replaced what the older ones amongst us used to refer to colloquially as ‘night school.’

Now, there’s something over and above that!

Designed to cater for those approaching retirement age – or who have already passed that magic milestone – the University of the Third Age (U3A) trades on the tag-line ‘It’s never too late to learn.’ Founded in Cambridge in 1982, the U3A in Britain today has almost 1000 groups, of which 30 are in Kent.

With an annual subscription of just £20, members gain entry to the monthly meetings at Detling Village Hall and membership of a wide range of interest groups. The aim is to help people who want to keep active in mind and

body but who are no longer in full time employment.

“The Third Age learning is when people learn whatever they want. Groups come together to study a subject they all find interesting and learning is interpreted in the broadest sense, with teachers learning and learners teaching.” The Bearsted and District U3A has about 34 groups with several more in the pipeline, covering a wide range of interests from languages, family history, book groups, bridge, scrabble, art, music and bird-watching. Each group has from six to 30 members.

The U3A monthly meetings include a speaker, refreshments and an opportunity to meet and chat to group leaders.

“We are widening the social side of our U3A with outings, coffee mornings and a luncheon club.” For more information go to the website u3a.org.uk

BEARSTED & DISTRICT U3A

We are a self-help, self-managed organisation for people no longer in full time work. Opportunities are provided for members to share learning experiences and to pursue learning, not for qualifications, but for enjoyment.

In September 2013 we joined with over 30 U3As in Kent. Our current 208 members enjoy leisure and educational visits and over 34 interest groups have become established.

At our general meeting, held at 2pm on the second Thursday of each month at Detling Village Hall, we have a topic speaker and the next meeting is on 9th June 2016.

Joining us is probably the best way to make new friends.

Visitors are assured of a warm welcome at our monthly meetings. Come along and see for yourself; there is no charge for visitors for their first two meetings.

From June 2016 new members signing up and paying the £20 annual subscription will have their membership extended until September 2017.
